E-M1 Mk2 & C-AF w/ 40-150mm f2.8 Pro: How Good is AF?

Considering buying this lens.  I've seen one report that this lens doesn't AF well w/ the new Mk2 E-M1. This user reported that the lens would fail to lock focus so the shutter would not fire half the time. Can any of you report your experience w/ this combo during C-AF?

Planning to use this combo as a short lens in addition to the 300mm for a trip to Africa.

Thanks for your help!

No problems here whatsoever.  Great combination.

This really is a trailor load of BS. I'm shooting nearly all my action with this combination. It delivers in fantastic style.

Re: E-M1 Mk2 & C-AF w/ 40-150mm f2.8 Pro: How Good is AF?

Can't comment on E-M1.2 performance with the lens but wholeheartedly recommend it based on my E-M1.1 experience, as it's my most-used lens. It and the 300 are the backbone of my sports shooting where I rely on their C-AF responsiveness and accuracy. I'm confident the mk2 is a notably better for both.

I'll go so far as to assume the report you cite is the result of a technical problem, sub-optimal menu settings, or very poor shooting conditions (i.e., poor light and field conditions). Setting up these cameras takes a lot of time and experimenting.

Good luck,

Rick

See my thread which tests the combo out

I posted a test a few minutes ago with the EM1 MK2 and the 40-150 pro at 150mm and f2.8

I shot cars travelling at around 70mph towards me. There was a lorry parked in the layby next to me so I had only a fraction of a second to initially acquire focus when the cars came into view. I then kept CAF active until the car was about to pass me. Shooting at 10fps with manual shutter.

There is a bit of heat haze which affects some of the more distant shots of the burst but other than that I would say I was getting well over 90% keeper rate... and that verifies what I thought I was achieving when shooting sports like football.

The lens and camera combo is performing better than any I've had before (which includes the Nikon D3s and D800 with the pro f2.8 zooms). Can't fault it.

Thanks Everyone!!

I was pretty sure the post about the problem was off base but wanted to make sure.

And you've all delivered a resounding vote of confidence.  My guess is the reported problem was either from using the wrong C-AF lock settings or equipment defect.  When I owned the ZD 300mm F2.8 & used it w/ the 2X TC, I'd sometimes loose electrical thanks again.contact & be unable to AF on the E-M1i.

If you worked for Panasonic, you would have had less than 33% keepers with the Olympus camera, consider yourself lucky!

The 40-150 pro is my bread and butter action lens on my E-M1mk2. Works like a charm.
