Dear Friends,

I have a big confusion to choose a lens between Tamron SP AF 17-35mm 2.8 vs Konica Minolta AF 17-35mm 2.8-4. I have heard d something like KM is having more flare prone attitudes than tamron.  If anyone used these lenses could you please tell me which one would be much better to add into my lens collections.

Heard about these two lenses.

KM +ves

Color

Tamron +ves

Build Quality

Do these have huge color tone differences in outputs?  I am using a Sony A7 body with LA-E4 adapter.

Detailed replies are welcomed,

Regards,

Dany

Two things here, first thing first if your are planing to use these lenses on a full frame camera the tamron wont work as is designed for an APSC sensor.

Now, in regards of the lens flare the Minolta is prone to lens flare however is easy to control, it is sharp but I wont be as sharp as other modern optics. I use it on my A99ii and it does the job, although I must admit that at some point I will upgrade it to the Tamron 15-30 2.8 that is mighty sharp wide open.

Both lenses are full frame lenses .

Both lenses are the same Tamron lens , the Minolta is a re-branded lens , along with a few other models .

The optics are the same . The main diference between the two are the coatings and either the focus ring or zoom ring turn the oposite directions .

I have the Minolta version and and use it on a Sony a900 and film cameras .It gives out a decent performance stopped down , but you do need to watch for flair , use a hat to shade the lens if needed .

With the sun in the shot , you can expect a problem .

I don't know if the Tamron is any better .

The lens I use for most of my wideangle shots is this one ;

http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/Sigma-15-30mm-F3.5-4.5-EX-Aspherical-DG-DF_lens123.html

It's a hard to find lens , but worth looking out for .

Sharper and wider than the lenses your looking at , also much bigger and heavier !

A down side is though that it doesn't have filter threads .

ND grads can be held by hand or hooked on with a bit of blue tack , but ND filters or coloured contrast control filters for B&W film are unusable due to light getting in from the sides of the petle hood .

Depends on your planned uses .

.

Both the Tamron and Sigma lenses are available in Canon mount if you want to use an adapter without the mirror ( and retain AF) and will be easier to find and re-sell if you didn't like it .

Yes! He is absolutely right. The Minolta 17-35mm lens is basically a re-branded 1st generation Tamron 17-35mm lens, with no image stabilization, and can be used on full frame Minolta film or the last digital Maxim 7 camera, or Sony A900, A99,  or any Sony A7 series camera with an LA-LEA 3 or 4 adapter.  If you want auto focus use a LEA-4. Buy used they are too expensive new.
It does seem to perform better on APS-C option.  (25.5 to 52.5mm equivalent)
You'll still get about 24 mgp. of information on an A7R 36 mgp. (1st generation camera,  in the A7R series)
Flashes used in TTL mode are a good idea when using older mid range lens too, which most of us don't want to do. But you'll notice Pro wedding photographers always have a flash on board. You won't get  as noticeable vignetting , when set properly with a full frame camera.

Ooops, it is actually a crop sensor lens. Put it on my A7R and had to put it at 25mm.

The 17-35mm isn't a crop sensor lens at all !

It's a full frame lens , I regularly use mine on both a full frame Sony a900 and my Minolta film cameras where it does well with Rollei Infrared film .

These are the lenses being discussed here ; http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/Minolta-AF-17-35mm-F2.8-4-D_lens27.html

And ; http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/Tamron-SP-AF-17-35mm-F2.8-4-Di-LD-Aspherical-IF_lens113.html

.

Not sure what lens you have , maybe the Tamron 17-50mm ?

That's a lens for crop sensor's .

The Tamron 17-35/2.8-4 is certainly a full frame lens. I've used it quite a bit on my LA-EA4 and on my A900, and a bit on a Dynax 7. The Minolta version is supposed to be identical. It certainly looks identical. It's screw-drive and has a detachable hood. I don't have it handy at the moment, but, from what I remember, it has 8-pins on the A mount.

When I get home I may try it on the Maxxum 7000 to see how it does on an old A mount camera.

Quite right .

The lens does have 8 pins on it , though it makes no difference in use .

The extra contacts are for relaying focus distance information for ADI flash metering .

As it's a screwdriven lens rather than a SSM lens it works just fine on the 7000AF ( and 9000AF)

The 7000AF has a big bright viewfinder ,still have mine , it was my first SLR .

Bought it used in the early 90's with the 35-70mm f/4 , 70-210mm f/4 and a 50mm f1.7 which I also still have and use .

It took a few months pay to get them !

The content of forums on DPR are of a great help. I've just bought a Dynax 7 film camera and an LA-EA4 for my beloved A7, and I am collecting my A mount lenses. My experience today was that Nikon/Canon hybrid (film/mirrorless digital/lenses) is more expensive vs Minolta/Sony. Dynax 7 is an absolutely brilliant film camera, the LA-EA4 work excellently on my A7. I wasn't sure, if this 17-35 D has full frame film/sensor coverage.

Re: Konica Minolta AF 17-35mm F/2.8-4 (D) is a Full Frame Lens

The Konica Minolta and Sony lenses designed for APS C are called DT (Digital Technology)

If you don't see that DT on a lens, it will work on Full Frame.

Tamron calls their Di II ( Di only works with all)

Just to add to the above , Sigma designates their APSC lenses as "DC" .
