Canon are no fools. They bundled the 24-105 in the kit for this very reason — it is the ideal walkaround lens. Some will tell you the 24-70 is better. Perhaps it's a tad sharper, and I have contemplated getting one, but I don't want to forgo the 70-105 and the IS, and have a bigger, heavier lens (most of my photography is travel).

I have the 16-35 f/4. It's a great lens, but if ever I were to travel with just one lens, it'd be the 24-105.

I miss my old 24-105 Version 1 as a great one lens walk around. The 24-70 f/4 L IS leaves me short.
For Travel to Europe for example, I pair a 16-35 f/4 L IS and the 70-200 f/4 L IS Mark II on two 5D Mark III’s. No need to switch lenses. But there are times when I want to lighten the load bit not fall short. Guess I will grab a 24-105 f/4 L IS Mark II just for that.
I am going to upgrade my 5D Mark III’s for new Mark IV’s this year as it’s the end of the line for the 5D DSLR series. As they are built like tanks, I want to grab them. I will then add the Mirrorless R5 after that.

I favour a 24-105mm f4.0 first ...

This was the one that was always on my EOS 5D (yeah, the first one). It is offered with IS. My next choice would be the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, but that is an expensive bird even now. Oh, the price of one stop and stabilization ...

Yes I would agree with all of that!  When I am carrying the 16-35 and 70-200 combo you describe I will also sometimes add my 50L just to have that lens that can add a totally different look to my subject.
