Canon PS SX730 and USB charging issue

I'm new to Canon cameras and just bought an SX730. All ok except I'm having problems with the USB charging.

It will charge when connected to some of my wall chargers and outlets, and not others.

E.g.

  • Using my external battery pack it'll charge on the 1A output, but not the 2A (using the same cable)
  • It won't charge on my 2A USB wall sockets
  • It will charge on my 2A Blackberry and Choetech wall chargers
  • It won't charge from my PC.

Bit annoying.  No other device I have is this picky over charging, Not sure if I have a problem with the camera (I can return it and swap it) or if it's just an issue generally.

TIA!

Canon PowerShot SX730 HS

Hmmm? I didn't think the SX730 was even available yet? Did you mean SX720?

Just curious, where did you buy your?  Did you get this fixed? Did you try calling Canon tech. support?

I see today that the SX730 is available on the BestBuy website (shipping as of June 6), though not available in stores.

A number of retailers in the UK have stock. I haven't fixed it yet. I called Canon, who failed to call me back or email me and I've not had time to call again. The retailer I purchased from is now out of stock so I can't order another one to try, and none of the shops near me have stock yet. so I can#t pop in and see if they charge ok.

Available here in Canada. Tried one out on saturday at Downtown camera in Toronto. No idea about USB charging, what is odd is that yours prefers the lower amp ports, usually it's the other way around with USB.

Well yes, No other USB device I have fails to charge off a higher output USB socket. Some might be faster but they all work.

I've tried with another SX730 and it has the same issue. I chased Canon up and their answer was basically to "buy our cable and charger" for another £70.

The Canon USB wall charger has a 0.55A output.

I bought it as a travel compact camera. All my devices charge off USB. iPad, headphones, phone, etc. so I don't want to be packing another wall charger as well. (a slow one at that). I think it's going back.

Wow, that's even more arrogant than Apple. £70 for a simple USB charger that shouldn't be needed in the first place. Why not design the cam to be compatible with normal chargers?

The SXxxx cams used to have the edge in IQ, somewhat justifying higher prices for accessories, but since the SX280, IQ went backwards with each iteration.

I'm out.

That is crazy, the main reason I would want USB charging is exactly why you did, to be able to reduce the number of chargers/dongles I was packing on a trip! Or just plug it into my laptop's USB port.

Thanks for following up on this as this makes a big difference to me as to whether I am going to consider one of these cameras as a backup.
