802.11ac - how much is it needed on mobile phone

Hi folks,

I'm in need of a new cell phone and am looking very hard at the Moto G5 plus.
My main hesitation is a lack of 802.11ac. My 4 year old S4 has it so I thought it strange for a new phone not to have it also.

I can't find anything online in reviews except they mention it doesn't have 'ac' but not what that means for wifi speeds.

Love your thoughts on this. I am also looking at an S7 (yes a little bit more $) as it has ac and is waterproof as well which I also would like...but the price of the G5 plus is great.

get one if your goal is to switch your router to 802.11ac only mode, because all your other devices support it. otherwise, there's no need to get a phone that has 802.11ac, because you are going to keep the router in legacy mode.
