Is that normal for the canon 200mm f2.8L (Sample Picture)?
1

I bought the canon lens 200mm f2.8L and i just wanted to try how would it be when i took pictures in low light situation ( cloudy , around 6:30 pm (quite dark in my country).

all of pictures were taken by the canon eos m10 with adapter.

picture:

and the picture below were taken by the canon ef-m lens 55-200mm f4.5-6.3 ( good light and different time)

Thank you for any suggestions.

Chalat.

what is your question? is "what" normal?

The only thing a bit weird to me is the way the bokeh looks on the 5th image, I think there's a leaf in front of the subject and there are a few bands in the bokeh.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. The images you posted look a little soft, but they're reduced down so much that I can't really pixel peep for critical sharpness. You said yourself the light was very poor, so I'm not sure what you're expecting. Your comparison images were shot under completely different conditions.

If you're concerned with the shallow DOF, you are using a larger aperture lens wide open, so there's going to be precious little DOF available.  I'm not sure how far away your subjects are, so make sure you're not closer than the minimum focus distance of that lens.

Also, the 200/2.8L is a non-IS lens, whereas the 55-200 has IS.  So if you weren't using a tripod, some motion blur could be an issue.

Suggestion:  Do a set of comparison shots, same subject, same lighting, same focal length (200mm), same exposure values (you'll have to stop down on the 200/2.8), same ISO.  Use a tripod.  Compare the results.  I'd hope you'll find that the L glass produces a sharper and more contrasty image. Then, gradually open the aperture up (lower numbers) as you increase shutter speed to compensate.  You should see where the L lens will really shine: its ability to separate subject from background.  As the DOF becomes smaller (larger apertures), your subject should start to "pop" out of the background.  Remember, this requires critically accurate focus too.

The first ones seem to have a slower shutter speed than necessary...

Re: Is that normal for the canon 200mm f2.8L (Sample Picture)?

My purpose i just wanna know if i take this photo under bad situation and the result occurred like this that is normal for the canon 200mm f2.8 ( I'm not sure about its capacity in low light of this lens) . this is my first L lens and I'm a new canon user ( i always take photos with iPhone and this is my first camera ). why i buy this lens? I thought my 55-200mm lens is not enough for the low light situation so i decided buy the 200mm f2.8 and i did not realized there is no "IS". I think i have to learn more about lens and how to take a good picture.

Today i took a photos in good light that make me happy with this lens. and thank you all comments.

ps. sorry for my bad English.

It's all part of the learning curve for sure!  I'm happy to hear that you got some good shots with it today.  Like I said, do some comparisons under the same conditions between the 55-200 and the 200/2.8L.  I think you'll be very pleased with the results.

Re: too long shutter speeds for the 200/2.8L

that old rule of the thumb: "use SS of about 1/FL" was a good advice for film or even for low resolution digital sensors.

But with modern Hi-Res digital sensors it is advisable to use SS about two times shorter than the 1/FL rule (not always easy to do, depending on available light levels).

Also, with optical performance  that the 200/2.8L offers, it would be a shame not to use it wide open
