You'll have to define inexpensive. The EF-M 28mm macro is $300 and to some that is inexpensive.

If you are just looking to mess around every once in awhile, I'd recommend getting the 50mm f1.8 STM lens and a reverse ring and reversing it on an existing lens (like the 18-55mm lens), if you don't already have the 50mm lens. That way you have a useful lens that can be used for portraits and macros and are just paying for the reverse ring to use for macros.

Another option is to get a screw on filter like the Canon 500D, that will add magnifcation to your lens. Just make sure to get a reputable brand, such as Canon, and not some cheap junk (there is alot out there).

Lastly, you could try extension tubes. They go between the camera lens and body. However, there don't make any for ef-m, so you would need an EF adapter and an EF/EF-S piece of glass to use them. They increase how close you can focus to your subject, therefore increasing magnification. A popular brand for those is Kenko. Again, go with something well known and not something cheap. Many of the cheap ones don't have electronics for communication with the lens or create reflections inside the tubes.

I hope that helps.

The Canon EF-M 28mm Macro is a wonderful lens.  As noted above, it may or may not qualify as inexpensive, but it's reasonable compared to many other Macro lenses.  And because of its short focal length and image stabilization, it's great for a new macro shooter.

As suggested above, extension tubes are an inexpensive way to get macro magnification from your existing lenses.  I haven't tried any of the EF-M compatible extension tubes, so I can't recommend any in particular, but I did find two types on Amazon, for not much money.  There's not much to an extension tube, but I do recommend that you get tubes that have the electrical contacts so your auto-focus and auto-aperture, IS, and other electrical/electronic gadgetry in your lenses will function.

Also suggested above are the "close-up filters".  I agree that you need to get good quality ones, or they can be awful.  The Canon 500D units are excellent.

Close-up filters have several advantages over extension tubes.  They don't reduce the light reaching the sensor nearly as much as tubes.  And they work well with zoom lenses because the focus doesn't change drastically as you zoom, the way it will with extension tubes.

But good quality close-up filters are rather expensive, so you might circle around and consider the EF-M 28mm Macro lens again.

Another vote for the EF-M 28mm. It's small, light, optically excellent and in my experience a great tool to learn macro photography. My first foray into macro photography was with mediocre macro filters and the results were underwhelming and the experience was frustrating. The new EF-S 35 f/2.8 Macro may be worth waiting for if you have EF-S mount cameras that you'd also like to use for macro, but if that isn't a consideration, I'd definitely recommend the EF-M28.

The ef-m 28 is a great macro especially built for the m series. It makes the m cameras shine like the ef-m 11-22 wide-angle. It is not that expensive and definitely the best choice if you don't need a longer focal length, eg. when picturing shy animals... (for those I use the ef 100 L IS macro with the adapter ... (not so cheap any longer)

Short walk yesterday through a nearby nature reserve with wild orchids. The ef-m 28 did not leave my m6 for a second ...

I may as well back up my recommendation of the 28mm with some pictures. I get pretty good results from bug hunting despite reading repeatedly that you can't use this lens for insects.

I think you made me forget about extension tubes and such. I love your photos. Now I got to convince the wife that this lens, the 28mm macro, will be the last for my new M5.

I love that lens with the M3 and now the M5. The sharpness, contrast and particularly the colour rendition impress me every time I play around with it. A quick word of caution to the OP, jannacis. I have to use flash for a lot (but not all) of those shots, I don't think the M10 has a hotshoe or built in flash.

I'd still recommend the 28mm though. Lighting for macro is a bugger and I've learned a lot from playing around with the built in LED's in that lens.

One day I should write a guide on what I've found works with that lens but the TLDR version would read something like this:

  • Use M mode, f13 and 1/200s shutter speed
  • Set the LED lights to full and use the pop up flash on the camera
  • Turn on IS
  • Roughly pre-focus at macro working distance
  • Stick your camera right in the face of an unsuspecting bug
  • Use the LCD touch shutter, tap on the bug's eye
  • Get the shot before the bug figures out what's going on and runs away
  • Ignore any/all of the previous points if the situation calls for something else

A really good lens to use with extension tube is EF-M 11-22mm IS STM because it's got good magnification "Maximum magnification of 0.30x at the telephoto end(22mm)"

So it kinds double as wide angle plus for plants / food photography.

I agree about using the EF-M 11-22mm IS STM, even w/o ext tubes (after I noticed the "MACRO" marking on the lens body).

I've been surprised by just getting up close to flowers. DOF is good, too, prob because it's a wide-angle. This makes it easy to just walk around the garden every day and shoot what you see - up close or not. My flower shot collection is growing now with really good shots.

I believe the macro marking on the lens is just to indicate the closest working distance, not that the lens is actually a purpose build macro lens. That being said the 11-22 and 22 both have pretty close minimum working distances and half decent maximum magnification.

If you have the 15-45 kit lens that came with the EOS M10, you can use a Canon 250D closeup lens - it screws on to the front of the lens just like a filter and allows you to focus closer. A new one costs $75 but I got mine off Ebay for $25 and added an inexpensive 49-52mm step up ring to use with the kit lens. Total cost less than $30. The quality is almost as good as a dedicated macro lens.

Thanks for the list of tips. It gives one a base to operate from. I hope the critters will pose as nicely for me as they do for you.
