Re: Impressive Hiking and Travel Camera

Thanks for the reply.

I've somewhat given up on the idea of an M-body with the 22mm and an adapter for the lenses I already have, as you noted it would be relatively big. ATM I still have 3 cameras as possible choice for me: the G7X II, the G9X II and the RX100 III; with the G9X II the current favorite because of price and size. And should I ever need more IQ I'll get a small Canon APS-C camera with DSLR-like body to use the lenses I already have with.

Hi SkipJG

I did some photos in Spain with my G7X mark 1 and really like it.

Could you explain what differences you have experienced in the mark 1 and 2 versions? I think I read somewhere that the colors where noticably better in the mark 2 and of course it has a much faster fps. But is the image quality that much better do you think?

Sorry so long ago. But wondering on your choice to shoot 3:2 (I think)? Also do you still have the camera? Or gone to a Mark II?

If I shot 3:2 i can't remember, and I don't think I would have thought about it at the time :). I still have the g7x mk1, but since then I went to the fuji xf system.

I agree with your review of the GX7 ii.  It is a perfect walk around travel camera

I wonder how you feel about the lack of  a viewfinder  I bought this camera for all the great features it has. I was comfortable with the zoom but I'm having a bit of trouble with the lack of viewfinder. I have to flip the screen out to set up some of the shots This is my first camera without one. I swore I would never buy a camera without a viewfinder but all the other features were part of my decision to get this one

100% my opinion.

For travelling now SX70 is my favorite and the G7XII is also in my bag

Problem solved.

Yes, the lack of a VF does cause some problems, especially in bright light. Surprisingly this even causes problems for me in the UK when we get a nice day!

As you say one way is to use the tilt screen function to adjust the screen so you can see it more easily. Which is possibly a good thing as it slows you down and makes you think a bit more about the photograph you are taking.

I use a DSLR (6DM2) much of time and the viewfinder is so critical on a camera that large. Almost from a “habit” perspective I really miss a VF on the G7M2. Buuuuut, the G7M2 is so small in comparison it more or less makes up for it. I find myself picking up the G7M2 more  and more just due to its convenient size and remarkable image quality.  Also, I take so many photos with my iPhone now that going to the screen on the G7M2 doesn’t seem as abnormal as it used to.

Its a great camera and I would and do recommend it to people. Especially now that it is on the Canon refurb site more and more.

Best,

Best,

A good screen is better than a bad VF. And yes, the IQ of the G7X2 does improve towards the long end. It all depends where you shoot most. I'm wide-angle guy. So the Sont RX100III is a better choice albeit not as nice to use... Cant have it all
