My latest toy, a PL6
2

Today my $190 PL6 arrived in the mail from Robert's Camera, and I was as happy as a kid with a red fire engine under the Christmas tree. It's pretty well a PL3, with a touch screen, that tilts more, and a red ring around the lens housing. And, it does have the 16mp sensor and goes off like a machine gun on continuous shutter setting. What a nice little camera, it surely is. And, when I put my FlashAir card in the PL6, the Olympus Share app recognizes it and zips all the photos to my Apple Photos camera roll, which is a very nice feature. The shutter seems quieter on my PL6, and it makes less noise. Overall, it's just a slightly better mousetrap than my old camera bodies. And, Oly has finally made their Pen cameras where they will stand upright with most of the common lenses, making it handier to use a table or a railing as a tripod replacement.

There was a local club meeting tonight, and I put my Oly 45 on the PL6 and even mounted up the VF-2 viewfinder. The camera is faster, and snappier to use than the PL3, which I thought was fast in it's own right.

My camera had less than 500 clicks on it, and it looks new. But the proof is in the picture taking, and truth be told, I couldn't tell any difference using the PL6 over the PL3 or the P3. They are all good image takers. My club members loved the photos, as they always do, and I think I have a new favorite camera.

Oly never has made any bad MFT cameras, but they keep making better handling, faster running cameras with more do dads and gizmos on them.

I went outside and saw how it would work in the failing light.

The trouble with Olympus is, that I honestly think I could have taken every one of those shots with my first PL1, and they would have looked virtually as good. I suppose those that blow the images up and look for faults would find more with the older cameras than the newer, but to my eyeballs they all look pretty good.

Olympus has made such a great gadget since the first Pens, that the only thing left to do is accumulate new camera bodies with more gee gaws, that are faster, quieter, and nicer to use.

I read about some guy in Vermont that lost his OMD Mk 5 with a weatherproof lens and it wintered in the snow, and it came out shooting. I guess I'll have to get around to getting one of those, in time.

But for now, I'm happy with the Pens I got.

Re: My latest toy, a PL6

Looks like you received a nice price on a really decent camera! Great photos too. I bought my E-PL7 brand new for $269 last winter, and consider it a major upgrade to my aged E-PL1.

I find it interesting that you think your old m4/3 can produce a image just as good as your new one can. While in good light, it's about 75% true (dynamic range is the main area that takes a hit on the older model). But go to dimly lit conditions, and crank up the ISO, and see what happens. I think you will rethink how big of an improvement your newer model is!

Violet Andrews Park, Portland Texas.

I took the image above this morning. Did some mild shadow lifting and highlight reduction. I know for a fact my E-PL1 could not have pulled off this image. The E-PL7 with the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 (great combo), worked great for this shot.

Anyhow, enjoy your new toy/passion! These cameras are among the best kept secrets in the industry! I love also using mine with my Nikon lenses (with the appropriate adapter, of course). The 50mm f/1.8 E series just sings on this body!

In good light 12mp Oly cameras do the job.

In bad light, I hope this new PL6 can beat my old ones.  It's pretty to think so, anyway.

That VF2 is an excellent EVF
1

So I found when I put it on my E-PL3. But I needed the accessory eyecup. And it had two failings -- both really pathetic when you think about it.

  1. There is no lock on the foot to prevent the expensive EVF falling out of the accessory shoe (which, of course, has provision for a lock -- a lock which all Oly flashes have). I nearly lost it a couple of times.
  2. The dioptre adjustment ring around the eyepiece is very easy to use -- and even easier to UNuse, to reset by accident. I was constantly having to reset mine.

I had no solution for 2., although I did think of super glue.

I resolved 1. by tying a bit of strong thread around the foot and attaching it to the left-hand strap lug. I had to laugh later when I bought a Panny GX7 to find that their accessory eye cup has just such an arrangement supplied as standard. It needs the string because you need to remove the eye cup to fit a flash or other item into the accessory shoe. I find the string solution kind of endearing from a big camera and goodness knows whatall corporation, LOL!)
