The ideal walk around kit
13

Well, ideal for me, that is.

GX7 + 12-32 + 45-175.

Formerly the Lumix 45-150 filled the telephoto slot, but I was never happy with it. Having now acquired the 45-175 used, and sold the 45-150, I am pleased with the exchange. The 45-175 is a little longer and just a touch heavier than the 45-150, but it doesn't feel like it!

We took this kit to the beach today. Unfortunately, the battery was only half charged, and my daughter, Jessica, on holiday here with me and the family, managed to run it flat before I got a chance to have a go (she had left her Canon at home)! Some nice pix.

SP is the local beer.

Note the specular highlights in the water in the first pic. Looked at in high magnification, they are little doughnuts. Interesting.

Enjoy your new gear. I don't use a telephoto very often - but to get used to one, I bought an Olympus 40-150mm R for the ridiculously low price it sometimes fetches. The 45-175 might be a step up. These photos look quite nice. Look forward to more.

For me, the ideal walkaround kit involves no lens swapping, so I have a GX7 & 14-140 for this. Just got me an LF1, and that might become my ideal walkaround kit, because I'll take it everywhere.. We'll see.

I find 150mm quite long enough when it comes to holding the damn thing steady enough for accurate composition.

I am finding that on the Gx85 my Oly 9-18 & the 35-100 f4-5.6 is a great set. On the Gx8 - either the Oly or the 12-35 and the 75-300 II. One small the other a bit larger but here in the Western US sometimes the distance is a just to big to take a step here or there and the 75-300 II is such a small lens for what it does.

Re: The ideal walk around kit

To add my walk around kit, its the GM5 and 20mm 1.7. That's it. It would be a good idea to switch to the 25mm 1.4 some of  the time - a  good FL for me.

Frank, that mad little Oly 40-150 is a super lens…

…is a super lens in my experience. I had it before the Panny 45-150. I abandoned it for the panny only because I was shifting to from Oly to Panny and wanted alkl my lenses zooming in the same direction. But I took some great pix with it, including with the Raynox 250 on the front of it for C/U and macros.

That was  a temptation for me too, Michael, but I do like a bit more reach and I wanted the internal zoom for macro work with the Raynox 250 fitted too.

Geoff,

Your photos and your comments do give a sense of your outing even if the battery went dead. Your posts always talk about your photos as a part of your life.

For over a year I've been using a Panasonic FZ1000 bridge camera as a walking around camera.  The 25-400mm (35mm eq.) zoom range comes in handy.  It displaced the G7+ 14-140ii zoom I had been using.

This folder has galleries from 2016 and 2017 taken with the FZ1000 (neighborhood walks) and some galleries with closeup photos taken with the G7 and Oly 60mm macro.

I would like to second that.  I am loving this combo.  Although I did purchase the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 mk2 for indoor/lowlight photography.

Heh... the GM1 looks funny with the 14-140 attached, but that's exactly what I've got stashed in my glovebox. Ready for anything!

Geoffrey - Glad you are back from your trip and shooting with you new gear.  i have not yet tried my "new" 45-175 with the Raynox, but liking the internal zoom.  Always enjoy your posts.

Wonderful shots from a land I've never visited!

I just recently sold what was my walk around kit of the 12-35 f/2.8 and the 35-100 f/2.8, I leveraged that money into the Olympus 12-100 which I keep on my GX7 and I couldn't be happier. I've never had a sharper zoom, the range is perfect, focuses amazingly close, and with the R-Strap it's no burden to carry. Not having to change lens is so convenient.

That does look like a really nice combo. Excellent IQ, and tiny size.

The donuts on specular highlights might be a unique(ish) feature of that lens due to the internal zooming. I wonder if it's using some sort of folded optics to get that amount of focal length in such a short lens.

I can't see how it could, Martin, but whatever -- I like what it does!
