EM10 at work in Santorini, Greece
20

Some images I shot at Santorini earlier this week with my EM10 and M.14-42 IIR.

I hope you like it as much as I enjoyed shooting them!

The town of Fira, just as the sun was setting.

One of approximately 1000 churches on this little island - as the sun was setting.

Shot in bright sunlight.

Yet another church in sunlight.

Nice set!.

I particularly like the second one... looks like sunrise. Beautiful light on the dome and I love how the light gently lights all the various facets in the frame.

Well done!

Thanks so much for sharing these.  Sometimes it's good to see a reminder of what a kit lens can do in capable hands.

By the way, I hopped over to your blog and loved seeing your pictures of Turkey, too!  Turkey is one of my favorite places, and I can't wait to return.

Wow, looks slightly unreal, like a movie set. Closest I've been is Santorini wine, which was very good BTW.

Thanks for sharing,

Rick

Yes I was pleasantly surprised to see how the light worked there. During the day the brightness meant that the blue contrasted strongly with the white, and at sunset everythig softened up beautifully.

Ah yes, Santorini wine.

Coming from a wine producing area ourselves, my wife and I are both wine lovers. We were surprised by the healthy wine industry in Santorini, and very impressed by some of  the wine they produce. Their white wines were really excellent end we have a ball there with all the lovely food and wine we found.

Because of the very strong and devastating winds Santorini experiences, they do not trellis their vines. They use bush-vine growing methods and have a unique way of arranging the vines in a circle, basket-like fashion close to the ground. The idea is that the leaves are on the outside and the grape bunches on the inside, thereby protecting the grapes from heat and wind.

We had our fair share of tasting wine!

Yes Turkey is a great place to visit and I will go back there in a heartbeat. We found that the ancient sites there were more spectacular than the sites in Greece, but the wines in Greece trumps the Turkish wines

Thank you for the follow-up and fascinating tidbit on the (non)trellising. I certainly don't see that in California, not even on the coast. You clearly made good use of your time there.

Cheers,

Rick

We've been told that this particular non-trellised bushvine technique is unique to Santorini, and certainly he first time I've encountered it. We have bush vine back in South Africa, but not in this basket-like form.

Did you find the sky and the sea extra blue in your photos?

What I found was that the sky appeared to be a stronger blue because of the contrasty conditions, especially during the day when the bright white of the buildings caused me to use less exposure, thereby turning the natural blueness of the sky into a deeper blue.

Theoretically I should desaturate the blue to make it look more natural, but I quite like it like that.

That's what I found last September. The sky over there was extra blue, and pretty, compared to what I am used to when looking at photos taken elsewhere. I suspect it has something to do with the strong clear sunlight in those islands. I did not desaturate my photos either, because I think it is natural for photos in that region. Before my trip, I have always thought that Greek photos as shown in posters and websites have been artifiically enhanced blue colours, but my own photos came out that way.

Here's another example - SOOC with no alterations at all.

The brightness of the building makes the blue of the sky stand out more and deeper.

if you look at the exposure settings in the EXIF info you will see how bright the day was.
