Does anyone know why my lens does not auto-focus on Aperture priority?

Hi guys,

I have a Canon Rebel T6s camera. My lens is 17-55mm, F2.8.

I have been using Liveview for most of my shots in the past year and everything works fine in AP mode. I am switching to shoot from Viewfinder. However, I notice my lens does not auto-focus when I use it via the View Finder when I press the shutter button half way ( it does a "tick" noise, similar to a clock's ticking noise). I then switch the setting to AUTO and the auto-focus works.

I have never dropped my lens or my camera. Do you think if this is a settings issues, lens or my camera body's issue?

It would be great if you guys can help. Thank you!

I would try factory reset of camera. The tick seems to me IS - stabilization.

By any chance, did you check the lens AF switch ?

Does the AF work when you press the * button (with your right thumb)?  If so, the camera has been setup for "back-button focus".
