I just did a quick look at the MX-1 on DPReview's comparator along with the Canon G15, the Fuji X-30, and the Panasonic LX7....

Sadly, they probably end the era of the 1/1.7" 12 MP sensor cameras.

Yes, now, we seem to be into the era of 1" sensors, but with more compromises in the optics.

They have no choice. If they put an optically corrected lens into one if these 1" cameras, it would double in size and weight... and sites like dpreview would roast them. #1 con would be "bulkier and heavier than comparable cameras".

They all are a little big for pockets in shirts or pants, they all have fast lenses, and except for the Fuji they all use a 1/1.7" sensor. Images are very close at low ISO. A really nice group of jacket pocket or small bag cameras. We could probably add the Nikon P7700 or P7800, and the Olympus Stylus 1 to that group.

The P7700 had one heck of a lens on it, and astounding build quality. Slow as molasses in everything though, I quickly sold mine. Nikon was so close to a classic with that model.

Tony,

That's an awesome gallery. Not only did the SX50 do well for you; but you have a good eye and obviously know how to make that camera sing. I particularly liked the "Jellyfish in outer space".

I have owned an SX50HS myself; but wasn't using it much, so I gave it to my daughter. I wasn't happy with the way the camera attached the hood and filter adapters. So I found a way to let it use 52 mm filters and the hood at the same time. If you're interested in how I did that, drop me an e mail, and I'll go through the details. It's pretty simple and doesn't hurt the camera.

Thanks very much, Jerry. The jellyfish was especially fun to photograph!

Happy shooting!

Tony

Re: Pentax MX-1

I gave both the P7700 and P7800 a hard look; but in the end I stayed with my G15.

I have heard that Nikon farms out the manufacture of their P&S models.  If true, I surmise that's the reason for the slow responses, and maybe the issue behind the failure of their DL series.

I had a Sony RX100 for a while, and didn't find it was that much better than my elderly S90 and S95, and really about on par with the G15.  The FZ1000 with the same 1" sensor in a much bigger body and lens is a much different story.

I can't speak the RX100, but I have the RX100 iii, and it really does give you more ability to heavily crop without it looking bad, and it's cleaner at higher ISO. So yes it is "much better", but all the cameras mentioned in your post can make great images, in skilled hands.

Re: Pentax MX-1

I had looked at the RX100 III; but passed because of the shorter maximum focal length and the greater size and weight.  Although I was very tempted by the faster lens and the EVF, and the reportedly better IS.  The RX100 IS was only good for 2 stops, and in low light with the slower lens, it wasn't enough.

The 1" sensor does have a noticeable advantage in noise.  So now I'm considering Canon's G7X II, although that's the same thickness and width as my G15, and only 1 oz. lighter.
