Shooting RAW images came out AMAZING!!!

I have been shooting RAW for quite some time now but I thought this photo was a dead one!!! I thought I could not recover anything from it being that for my taste it was too dark!!! Lucky I shot it in RAW and processed it in Photoshop CS6... The result in my humble opinion was amazing!!! Let me know what you think and as always C&C are always welcome!!!

After After -- Denoised and color corrected

The image was severely underexposed. One can try to "save" it by increasing brightness and lifting shadow when processing the raw (Canon CR2) file in ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) before further editing in Photoshop CS6. However, by increasing brightness and lifting shadow, one introduces a lot of noise -- this is a weakness of Canon raw data from Canon sensors.

The "recovered" image may look good, but a lot of details are lost. This may not matter if the image is downsampled (size reduced) for web sharing.

Nice try.

Good for you!  That is why we shoot RAW.  There is so much that can be squeezed out of your image file that would be impossible to do with a jpeg.  You don't have to worry about getting the white balance perfect at the time of shooting as that can be corrected later.  Always try to get exposure right at the time of shooting, but it is nice to know you can fall back in post processing.  I was shooting a wedding a few years ago and my flash batteries we starting to go soft on me when doing a rapid sequence.  Turned out the flash failed to fire in one part of the sequence, and wouldn't you know that this particular shot was golden.  Fortunately, I was able to salvage it with post processing of the RAW file.

At the moment, I prefer the RAW output from Capture 1 Pro.  Simply stunning!

Have fun!

Did you intentionally expose it like that or was it an error ?

I too love shooting RAW and taking the time to correct images.  My example was taken at The Tides lobby in Bodega Bay, CA a couple weeks ago.  The original picture was a mess.  Playing with the conversion only, no further retouching, I was able to bring the picture back from the Recycle Bin.

Before

After, without any further manipulation other than Canon DPP

I'm sold!

Hi RobBobW,

Had a brief look at your website. You've got some nice images.

Not quite. With a Canon it is better to raise the ISO for the exposure so that the histogram is to the right, but in this case I bet the main reason the data is noisy is because so little light was captured.

Check out the unofficial Rebel Talk FAQ. Sorry it's out of date, but DPReview still won't allow us to edit our articles.

It might be only me but I would have made a mask out of the black of the first picture to keep the background black on the second, to have the flower bright on black background.

And if the flower main color was white then apply a white balance to get it very white.
