An alternative to Samsung.

Goodmorning everyone. They are three years that use Samsung NX3000 and are very pleased with the results I've had. In recent times I begin to have some minor problems that the service center has resolved. To avoid future problems are looking for a mirrorless that good features. Once accustomed to this type of sensor I can no longer take pictures with lower sensor. Unfortunately Samsung no longer manufactures cameras and then try other models. Among the many models to value and size, I analyzed the characteristics and Sony A5100 seems like a viable alternative to NX3000 and superior characteristics. The size and portability resulting like. Which judgments you have about this pattern? Do you have tips for other models? There are also many other models with APS-C sensor very interesting but unfortunately have a fixed focal length and thus seem limiting. Thank you all for the advice.

Re: An alternative to Samsung.

What is important to you?  Stills? Video? Sensor size (m43, apsc, full frame), lens selection (wide angle, zoom, portrait, long distance sports or wildlife)?

There are many great cameras on the market.  Each has their own strengths and weaknesses, you need to know what you want to do with the camera system then you will be able to choose the one that is right for you.

Re: An alternative to Samsung.

Usually I do a lot different pictures but the main features of my photos, as you can see from my Flickr site are oriented architecture, street and pictures in the evening or night. I do not do video. I prefer portability and therefore with very small dimensions and with sensor not less than APS-C.

Re: An alternative to Samsung.

I recently made the switch from an NX300 to a Panasonic G85.  I was initially concerned with going from an APS-C sensor to micro four thirds, but I've been extremely pleased with the image quality so far.  The biggest selling points for me were that the camera and kit lens had weather sealing, dual-image stabilization from the body and lens, articulating screen, and a large selection of lenses from Panasonic, Olympus, and other third-parties.  It also has 4k video, which I don't use but it's nice to have.  The only drawback for me was the G85 is only 16 megapixels where as most APS-C camera are 20+.  I rarely print and even when I do I find that 16 megapixels is more than enough. Though I would love to have the extra megapixels for cropping, but otherwise it's made me more conscious of my framing to get the shot right from the start.

I also agree with John to check out the Fuji X-T20.  It looks like a fantastic camera and I've heard that Fuji makes some very high quality lenses.  Ultimately I decided against the camera because of the lack of weather sealing, no articulating screen, and somewhat limited lens selection.  Lenses are also generally more expensive than micro four thirds, but I still think it looks like a great camera and I'm sure you'd be pleased with the quality moving from Samsung.

The most important factor you DIDN'T tell, us. BUDGET!

If you look at the A5100 it seems you are looking at the lowest of the lowest of cost.

If your budget is limited, and because I see that you ALREADY have 3 NX lenses, maybe a NX300 or NX30 that can be found from 150euros (for the first) to a lot more (for the second), can be just perfect for you. Maybe invest on a Samyang 12mm or NX 12-24 for your landscape photography.

I do have a NX3000, used to have a NX300, and I tell you, the NX300 is a much better camera in every sense. The sensor of course is similar (NOT the same, AF system of NX300 is miles ahead) but this is not a bad thing, even though I found the NX300 photos a bit better than my NX3000.

In everything, ergonomics, touch screen, AF, menus, design, the NX300 is much better, and can be had for cheap (especially if you can find a good one).

In my opinion, and for photography only, a 20mgpxls APS-C sensor is much better than a 16 m4/3. If you cared mostly for video (60-40 videos to photo, and up) I would definitely advice you a Panasonic camera.

Now, if you want to spend more, there are two options for you, a Fuji camera (the aforementioned is maybe exceeding your budget though, and the lenses are not that cheap),

and a Canon M6, the pancake lens (22mm/2f) and the 11-22 ultra wide zoom are exceptional lenses to have (for the price and size), but no other interesting lenses in the system. From your NX equipment, I understand that you do not need a lot of lenses, so this pancake, the ultra wide zoom (for landscapes) and the kit lens with the camera, you will be fine.

Re: Look for a good Samsung NX 300..........

I just got me a new (?) NX300 with both kit lenses , the 18-55lll OIS AND the 16-50 PZ lens , and all accessories for $300 USD . The icing on this cake is the whole kit looks like it was unused. I`m a casual shooter so the kit lenses work quite well for me.

I had seriously considered the Sony A 5100 but for 1/2 the cost I think I have a markedly better camera with the NX300, after all just 3 yrs ago it WAS Samsung`s flagship camera in it`s class.  My in depth research tells me the Sony kit lens doesn`t seem to be as good as either Samsung kit lens.

Re: An alternative to Samsung.

We see some people coming from Samsung to our little Sigma corner.

See some Sigma Foveon pictures on Flickr, download them in Hi-Res and decide if you like what you see.

I would advise some extensive research; siggies are not for everyone.

Then again, for architecture I think you get the best bang for your buck with Sigma dpq0 or H

Re: An alternative to Samsung.

Thank you all for the advice. As you can see in my Flickr gallery Fotostream I am pleased much NX3000. In fact after so many years to change a system that gave you satisfaction is not easy. In addition to the technical features that are very important to me it is also important to everyday portability; that's why I mentioned the Sony A5100 model. As someone also says another Samsung NX300 can be as interesting as the size is very similar and I could already use lenses I use 16-50mm, 16mm and 30mm F2. In any case, the research is not easy and I want to consider all your suggestions.

Since you already own the 16mm and 30mm Samsung lenses (both excellent) and you want small form factor with apsc size sensor, I would seriously consider a used nx500.

I think it would be the perfect camera for you, Espicially since you already like the look of what your getting from your nx300.

If you absolutely have to get away from Samsung I would check out the new fuji models. Your going to pay more, but the image quality will be great in a very small body.

Fuji or Sony...

+1 , I agree. Fuji make very good job with their MILC cameras, and with lenses too! X-T20 is excellent model and good value for money.

Older Sony A6000 is great value too, you can get this older model truly affordable price nowadays. EVF is good thing to have, remember that. Of course newer A6300 and A6500 models are excellent camera too, but also price rises ...

Happy shootings,

Ari

Any camera can be great. Look at the very old Nikon D70 where DPReview posted about. Still people using that old 6MP camera and getting great results. I cant believe number of people on here that truly think they "need" the latest camera and think that a discontinued brand is no longer any good.

Amen to that!

One of the reasons I have many different brands is the fact that I want to be able to help every guest I have on my photo-trips, so I try to know them all by heart and menu-structure and all.

The other reason is I simply love camera's, and especially have a fondness for dead-end lines of camera's with different designs / ideas. I'm eying the Ricoh-line now to buy an old one

The Samsung lenses that I use in Samsung NX3000 (16-50mm - 30mm f2 -16mm) if you buy a Mirrorless Fuji or Sony can be adapted?

Mirrorless lenses are not adaptable.

You have to see what lenses you need in other systems, and how much they cost.

Re: An alternative to Samsung.

Thanks for the answers. These days it reflects enough to decide what to do. The mirrorless I like are Fuji X-T20 and Sony a6300. They cost enough and so I decided to wait some time to buy them possibly at a lower price. Alternatively I found a viable Sony A6000 + 16-50mm to 420 € but this way my Samsung lenses can not be used. In the meantime I have found alternatives for my Samsung NX3000. I found a Samsung NX300 still under warranty for over a year with 18-55mm around 250 €. I also found a body with sd 128Gb NX500 only 400 €. At this point to use lenses I already have thought of staying still in Samsung. The Samsung NX300 + 18-55mm is interesting as price and especially for assurance that I have for over one year. According to you the differences between Samsung NX3000 and NX300 for the quality of images you can see? I would not buy a product that finally gives me the same results. Thank you

You'll not see any difference in results. Actually NX3000 might have slightly better jpg engine.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/137263652@N05/?. Almost all photographs taken with the NX3000. If no NX300 allows me to have better results it does not make sense buying. I will consider another brand to be attached to my NX3000 in the future.

NX300 has more features, a vastly better AF system and ergonomics, the touch screen implementation is incredible, but the quality is similar.

NX500 is still at the top of crop cameras at DxO list, it is one class and a half above NX300 and 2 classes above NX3000. Much better in everything than the NX300, and NX3000 is kind of primitive in front of the NX500.

NX300+ the lens for 250 is very tempting, is it brown? because I am missing a brown NX300, that I sold a couple of years ago!
