How many different cameras are you using?

Well I know that Michael and I have been around...

...these forums for quite some time now and I believe he's gone through a wealth of cameras just like I have.

As for me (with over 40 cameras currently sitting in bags and/or drawers), I can say that I still use them all - some of the older models not so much anymore, but others, more often.  So my vast collection, in this instance, is a combination of collecting (and holding on to) cameras I've loved using in the past and which I've had some emotional involvement with - along with having newer version, which pique my interest.

So right now, this seemingly irrational "emotional involvement" is centered around 4 mirrorless systems, and some older models.  These include M-43, Fuji X-Trans, Canon EOS M, and the Samsung NX mirrorless systems.  Then there's the older regular Four Thirds models I still maintain and some point and shoots by various makers.

There are those us who have sold some really excellent cameras in the past - only to have subsequently come to regret doing so.  I know that for a period of time a decade or so ago, I'd sell a camera if I wasn't using it much.  And I sold some very nice cameras in the past, only to later begin reviewing images taken by them and realizing that it was a huge mistake for having parted with them.  Then in most cases, I'd wind up looking for the same models again - sigh.  So I don't do that anymore.  If I really enjoy a camera, it stays now.

Heck, I still periodically shoot with the ole' 5 MP Olympus E-1 (with Panny-Leica Vario zoom lens).

Re: Actively Using? (moving target for me)

Just curious: How many different cameras are you actively using? Not counting those collecting dust in some storage, or those that happen to come with your phone or tablet

I voted 5 (because 2 bodies are the same). In general, this my current rotating usage:

  1. GM5 (Black) w/PL 15mm f/1.7 (love this combo); Tamrom 14-150mm occasionally sees use here if I really think I'll need a walk-around zoom.
  2. Samsung NX mini (White) w/NX-NXM adapter + 55-200mm III (reaches 540mm equivalent) -- primarily for wildlife and video recording kids events from the back of an auditorium (the parents that sit up front tend to be fanatical, this setup allows me to stay out of their way)
  3. GM1 (Silver/Black) w/12-32mm -- for travel or indoor use where fill flash might be needed (I like the framing screen better on this vs. the GM5)
  4. Samsung NX mini (Black, 2nd body) w/17mm f/1.8 -- for travel or indoor where fill flash might be need, or a faster lens is needed, or longer battery is needed (2330mAh, a GM-series can't touch that).  The 9mm sees use with I need pocketable.

Plus 2 current experimental bodies:

  • YI M1 (Black) with all sorts of lenses at the moment.  Having fun with this one.  It might make it into regular rotation.  The sensor is really good.
  • Pentax Q-S1 (Black) with all sorts of lens experiments.  I have a 500mm ready for the next full moon (if the sky cooperates, been cloudy last two chances).

No use in over a year (all my APS-C bodies):

  • Pentax K-series (K-01, K-S1)
  • Samsung NX2000 (this was a favorite in my fleet a couple of years ago, but I've slowly been migrating away from NX).

I really only pull the APS-C camera out for big scenery trips (National Parks, etc.) and it's been a couple years there.  That said, the 4/3 and 1" sensors hold up pretty well to the 20mp APS-C sensors, so I've downsized my day to day.   The Pentax K bodies, NX2000, GM1, and Q-S1 are the most likely bodies to be moved on for other gear (if I can let go... 'tis always the hard part).

Most of the time, three

I use my Nikon D750 for freelance photo jobs (for which I need its low-light capability), I use my Panasonic GX85 for a compact travel kit (w/12-32mm & 45-150mm lenses), and I carry my Panasonic GM5 when I want the lightest go-with-me-everywhere camera.

Also, I go to a lot of antique car shows, and would bring my Fuji XA-1 for the wonderful colors and IQ it would produce. But for other than bright, sunny environments, the camera's autofocusing leaves much to be desired.

I use 3 different cameras at the moment: my m43 for general shooting, a compact FF for landscapes and "special" shots, and an IR-converted m43 for, well, IR photography. I also have a waterproof P&S (Olympus Tough) for diving etc, but that doesn't happen on a regular basis, so not counting it as active.

Just wondering if I am average or what. Share what you do and why.

I used to have a bunch of other cams and got rid of most of them.

That was 3 years ago. Liked the E-PM2 so much that I got rid of all the others!

2 or 3 if counting my phone.

One compact, x100T replacing my gx85 + 20mm

One for general purpose, em5.2 with a few lenses.
