Swimming upstream - Bought an NX1 Today
4

Hi, I'm new here. And may already need to change my name...
So, this may have been an idiotic move on my part, but I bought an NX1, really bought into the system headfirst today.

NX1 body barely used
16-50mmS
45mm f1.8
Rokinon 12mm F2.0

$1900 (did I overpay?)
I'm currently using a G85, mostly for vlogging and review videos, but I also do a lot of photography of my very small children and have noticed the m43 system a bit lacking. I can still get good photos, but it's a bit of a hassle.
I did everything I could to step around the NX1, but somehow kept arriving back at it as the most viable solution. It seemed like every path I'd travel down had some significant limitation in regards to pulling double duty.
It truly seems, on paper, that this is the best hybrid solution on the market - even two years later. And I'm obsessed with taking risks in the secondary market to find good value.
So should I be worried? Aside from needing a repair, I don't know that I'll be that bothered by Sammy shutting down. I can't imagine needing more glass beyond MAYBE the 50-150 well down the line. The h265 codec isn't a problem for me as my workflow is already in Adobe Premiere and I frequently use Handbrake.
It seems like so many people are bailing on the platform because Samsung is getting out. But what am I missing? Is this platform as it stands not representative of a lot of performance for the money? Are most people worried about the lack of more lens options in the future? Or is it something else?

If you enjoy it for an extended period, definitely not. I think those 3 lenses are very good and each makes the NX1 camera pretty special.

Welcome and have fun with your new equipment.

I'm finding it difficult to buy accessories and lens.  Not many places besides Ebay and Amazon and prices seem to be getting higher with constant reselling.  No deals whatsoever.

Not idiotic at all. Makes perfect sense to me. There are people on this forum as well as on FB etc who still choose NX1 over other latest cameras.

Plus that price is a steal! I paid that much just for the NX1+16-50S! Also that 45 is a sweet lens but only reason I'd choose 45 over the S lens is for a smaller set up. The 12mm from what I've heard is stellar.

Welcome and feel free to share your work

With those lenses I'd say you got a great deal.  Didn't overpay at all.  The 16-50, 45, and rokinon 12 are arguably the best lenses for the system (missing only the 50-150 or 85 for portraits).

You should be enjoying that combo for years to come.

Enjoy!

For a similar set on any other APS-C brand you would need double those money, so it is a great deal, certainly just a fraction of what I have paid!!

Most people are worried about the lack of future bodies, not lenses (I have exactly the lenses I need, if you need more tele, then it is not the right system for you).

In a couple of years, NX1/NX500 will be behind technologically, especially for video as HDR 10 bit will be the norm.

The other things missing, will be IBIS, which most certainly will be mandatory in future cameras and low light performance.

If you have invested in too many lenses, the situation is not amazing, as in a couple of years, that you will need to upgrade your cameras, the lenses will be dead weight, or try to sell for cheap, or (that is what I am planning to do!) give to your nieces to learn the trade!

For a hobbyist, it will be very difficult to outperform these cameras -and lenses - for a long time, and these prices are best value for money. Your lenses are excellent, and are covering most bases, and then you can buy any adapted long tele or prime, or even a cheap 50-200 to fill some holes. In my opinion NX1 is still the best consumer hybrid camera.

In theory, I don't disagree with this. Though I anticipate the adoption of 4K sets and monitors will be slower than was the adoption of 1080p. And even now, true 10 bit panels for HDR in the consumer TV space are pretty rare and expensive. And the affordable ones, like the Vizio M series and a number of non-OLED LGs don't even get bright enough to utilize it.

I'd say this platform should hold up for at least 4-5 years without getting lapped by competitors. But the value in the secondary market will likely peak in the next year or so.
My bigger concern with camera bodies is what will be the erosion of servicing options should I have any trouble. That's my only true concern.

There are still servicing Samsung cameras, and there are brand new -so with 1 or 2 years official warranty.

I am a professional videographer, and I am expecting to need higher specs than most people, and sooner.

As I said, for an amateur, it is very hard to beat the camera's capabilities.

Oh absolutely for professional work. While HDR10 isn't currently in /that/ high of consumer demand, that content is already being produced. And I could see one dating one's work pretty quickly if they didn't plan ahead.
