Canon rebel T5 won't connect to Yongnuo speedlite

I am having trouble using my new speedlite. I have a Canon rebel T5 and I recently bought a Yongnuo YN560 IV speedlite. When i attach it to my camera and go into settings i am given an error message that reads "menu not available. Flash is off or unsupported, or an accessory is attached". The flash is turned on. When looking into this product i was under the impression that it would work with my device. Is this flash just not compatible with my camera? The instruction manual with the flash gave little to no detail about trouble shooting and my camera manual does not give any information about using external flash.  Please help, I'd really love to start using and learning this new flash.  Thank you

Re: Canon rebel T5 won't connect to Yongnuo speedlite

Yongnuo YN560 IV Is a very simple fully manual speedlight.  It'll work, but there is no communication with the camera other than the single center pin in the hotshoe that tells it to fire when the shutter opens.  All speedlight settings are made with the controls on the speedlight.
