Clicking noise when shooting electronic shutter on E-M1 Mk II

I usually shoot wide open on all my lenses on all my lenses so far this year so I never noticed this until this past weekend. If I stop down a couple stops at 8 fps in S-AF mode I get a distinct clicking noise while using the electronic shutter. This is most noticeable on my 75/1.8 and I was able to duplicate it on the 12-40/2.8. If I go to the C-AF mode the distinct clicking goes away. Is this normal and if so what is its cause?

I'd guess it's the aperture shifting quickly between wide open and whatever value you selected. While looking into the front element, rattle off some shots and you should be able to see the aperture moving.

As for why you're now hearing it, the mechanical shutter sound would mask it, and if you have the aperture set wide open, it doesn't have to move for the exposure.

It's fairly quiet on the C-AF mode, so why does the S-AF mode be so noisy. This past weekend was the first time I shot in the S-AF mode.

I don't have a Mark II, so that's for someone else to answer. If you experiment with the different modes while looking into the lens, you may figure it out. Please let us know.

I get a low click sound with the 300mm f4 in either the SAF+MF or CAF modes when the lens stops down.  I haven't noticed it to be louder on either one, but sometimes I notice it more than others depending on background noise levels.

It's quite noticeable on my 75/1.8. At first I thought I damaged the lens or camera as I was changing lens at a school play this weekend. I'll play around with it later this week. Got a 14-35/2.0 coming in today, and I want to run that lens through its paces.

Re: Clicking noise when shooting electronic shutter on E-M1 Mk II

I'm hearing this when shooting with my 100-400 in particular but also on occasions with the 12-100 and the 40-150 mk2 kit lens.

As mentioned above I have put it down to aperture chatter and get it with both SAF and CAF.

Whilst I haven't done any systematic work to trace the cause I get the impression it doesn't happen when I shoot wide open, only when I stop down

The other thing is that it isn't consistent, sometimes there is no sound others its very frequent and obvious (I wonder if its something to do with the light levels? )

I'd stopped worrying about it until you posted this

In addition to the above you might try changing AEL/AFL mode. They lock exposure differently (half press/full press)  and perhaps that affects cycling the aperture blades (p.123). Or, S vs. A vs. M mode.

FWIW the mk1 does it too.

Cheers,

Ricl
