E-P5 VS. OMD-E-M10

My son wants to jump into the MFT world. He has a chance to get for a very attractive price a brand new E-P5 with Olympus 17mm. f/1.8.

I am using the OMD-E-M10.

I wonder how do they compare in image quality?

They should be virtually indistinguishable. Same sensor. E-P5 has slightly more advanced IBIS. The E-P5 has no built-in EVF, but the bolt-on VF-4 is better than the E-M10's EVF.

The E-P5 is very pretty, if that is important.

All in all, both are good cameras. Tell him to go for it if the price is right.

I used to have the E-M10 and now have an E-P5. As already noted, the image quality is the same but the IBIS is better on the E-P5. Other differences:

1/8000 max shutter speed on the E-P5

Here are a couple of threads comparing the two:

VF-4 is nice but inconvenient

As a former owner of VF-4 and E-PL6, I have to mention that the VF-4 is an amazing viewfinder but inconvenient. It's large and while you could keep it on your camera all the time it does add to the bulk and makes a beautiful camera look strange. I primarly shoot with the LCD so the use was very limited and I am happy with the substantially inferior GX80 viewfinder for occasionally VF shots just because it's always there.

VF-4 is also 120-130€ or so from Ebay which may be substantial. I paid 200€ for my E-PL6 kit so the  price was very substantial, but at least right now they seem to be fairly ressellable. I managed to get most of what I paid back.

As others said, IQ essentially the same, but EP5 has more features. A viewfinder is important for steadier photos and a feeling of connection to your subject. If it comes with the camera, great, although the VF4 makes the gorgeous EP5 look fairly ugly, IMO. If it doesn't come with the camera, they are expensive and he may miss having that feature. I had an EP5 for several years, it's a great camera.

I own both, and use the E-P5 almost all of the time, because of it's superior handling. In bright light I use a Clear Viewer. I started with the M10, and "downgraded" to the E-P5.
