How to "lock" canon G11 and G1X user buttons?

Hi,

i have a Canon G11 and a G1X mki.

i love the results of these camera's but do not like the fact that it is very easy to accidentally press one of the tiny buttons on the back of the camera.

is there a way to set all the things you want and then lock all buttons at once so that they have no function any more when pressed.

many thanks

Robert

Do you have fat fingers? 😮 No joking aside, not sure this is possible to disable the buttons

Lol.....he's not alone....

For the first few days I owned my new G3X, I found the camera already booted up, and diplaying the digital clock, several times, when pulling out of the camera bag.

It was my fingers inadvertently pressing just the right sequence of buttons on the back of the camera, as I reached into to camera bag and while gripping the camera to pull it up and out of the bag.

Silly me...!!

Re: How to "lock" canon G11 and G1X user buttons?

I don't know about locking buttons, beyond potentially assigning functions to those that allow it that will cause minimal disruption, but I did discover a workaround for a related issue. When traveling on vacation, it's always tempting to hand my camera to a stranger and ask for a photo of my wife and me. Of course, I always look for a stranger with proper gear who presumably knows how to use an actual camera. However, despite this, it's not unusual to find that some of my settings have been inadvertently changed by accidental movement of the barrel ring or dial, depending upon the camera involved. To avoid these surprises ruining later photos until I realize what happened, I started using the C function on the mode dial. Program in a suitable group of settings for likely shooting during the trip and leave it in C mode. When you get it back, turn the camera off and on again before your next shot and you'll be reset to your custom default settings.

Re: How to "lock" canon G11 and G1X user buttons?

Unfortunately no way to lock the buttons.

By your post I'm guessing your hold the camera so that the lower portion of the thumb/ palm is pressing the buttons -- which is easy to happen as the buttons are not recessed below the back surface of the camera.

What I do with the G1 X (and the G15) is to position my thumb on the rear rubber pad and the bottom edge of the camera at the thumb/ hand joint.

For me, this places the lower portion of the thumb/ palm below the rear camera buttons and arches the upper portion of the thumb enough not to press the rear buttons.

However do need to take care while placing thumb the rear rubber pad as not to press the record button.

Cheers,
Jon
