Re: canon M5 turns off the screen

following is the answer for my a question that I got from canon.

Thank you for your request and for contacting Canon.

With reference to your enquiry concerning turning off the screen on your EOS M5, we can provide you with the following information.

The camera’s screen automatically turns off after a period of time and then the camera will then switch off automatically after another period of time. There is no dedicated button for this as it occurs automatically.

By default, the screen will automatically deactivate after about one minute and the camera after another minute. Should you wish, you are able to adjust this setting. The Power Saving option can be found in the 2 tools tab of the menu.

After information on this can be found on page 158 of the user manual, which can be downloaded using the link below, should you require.

Once again, thank you for contacting Canon. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact again.

On M3 you can customize one of the available buttons to turn off the screen immediately, I'm pretty sure you can do it on M5, too.

The M-Fn button next to the shutter is configured on my M5 to work as a screen on-off.  Very useful.

Easily found in the menus or manual.

This works, sort of. I set the M-Fn button to turn off the display, and it did, until I used the EVF. When I removed my eye from the EVF, the display came back on.

This custom setting turns off the display temporarily, but if the original poster wants to turn it off for good, I'm not sure that's possible.

Exactly right.  The EVF resets the button.  I've lived with it set this way for a couple of months and having the screen / M-Fn switch right next to the shutter works for me, and the EVF restting bit is appreciated in practice.

Well I have just bought an M5 and was wondering how to allocate the MFn button to turn off the screen.  Still not worked that one out yet, but I've only had the camera for a couple of hours

However there is a way to turn of the screen totally.

Go into the menu and select the SPANNER.

Spanner-DISPLAY SETTINGS

Select the DISPLAY CONTROL.

Change from AUTO into MANUAL

Now come out of DISPLAY CONTROL

Select  MANUAL DISPLAY and chose VIEWFINDER

Now the SCREEN is permanently OFF.

However the EVF is now on, so go into POWER SAVING and select 15 sec OFF.

THe EVF will switch back on as soon as you put your eye to the viewfinder.

Hope this helps.

I don't have an M5. I do have an m3 and the optional EVF. Given that the battery life is rated as the same with the screen or EVF, I don't think turning it off would save any battery unless the EVF also goes black. This is probably what Power saving mode does. I've that set on my M3 and get way more shots than it is rated for.

Well. At first it works, but evf is easy to be turned on unintentionally abd drains power in vain. So I switch manually between evf and lcd by assigning one button to the switch function and use another button to turn off LCD screen. Especially video record button is good for it because the button is easy to be hit without caution.

This worked for me. Thanks! Having the LCD off should save battery life. I also assigned my Delete function to switch between EVF and LCD if I need to use the LCD for live view, review photos, etc.

Re: canon M5 turns off the screen

IMO the logic in the M5 is deeply flawed in this respect. If you tilt the camera it just turns itself back on. If you put anything near the EVF, it turns itself back on. There was a whole thread about this a while back.

I too have the M-Fn button set to turn the LCD off, but, given the above, it feels like i have to fight to keep it off. I've just got used to powering it down now if I don't think I'll need it immediately.

That is my recommendation for any mirrorless camera. Indeed, when shooting with my DSLRs, I turn the power off if there is any significant downtime.
