EGYPT Adventure - trip video and photos from E-M1
9

Some of you may have seen this posted somewhere else, but for those who haven't, I just finished a full length edit of my trip to Egypt last May.

It's a very amazing place to visit as it is rich in history and culture. We were lucky to experience a lot and captured most of it in the video....ancient Egyptian history in tombs of the Pharoahs that were 5000 years old, crashing a wedding on the Nile and dancing with the bride/groom, hot air balloon rides in the desert, sailing down the Nile, island dance parties with locals after getting engaged, a fully armed 10 soldier convoy to escort two of us over 8 hours to the infamous Abu Simbel temples, and of course beach time to snorkel, hit the cable park and kiteboard. We did almost everything...which is why the video is a full length edit

Shot on an E-M1 MkI, a GoPro 4 with gimbal and that's it since my drone got held at customs upon entering the country (and we were detained for 4 hours for "espionage" concerns).

Hope you enjoy as I'm pretty excited about some of the stuff I captured in this edit (it's no Congo video, just different). The photos below are just a small sample - they aren't perfect from a technical perspective, but they should give you an idea of what life is like in Egypt.

Sometimes you just need to chill after your tea and smoke.

I didn't see a two-hump camel, so I figured two single-hump camels was decent enough

Prayers in the mosque

Rooftop sleeping.

Hmm, having a tough time embedding the video for some reason, but here goes again:

Were you allowed to use your camera inside the mosque or did you just take the picture when nobody was looking?

It was allowed as it wasn't a designated prayer time.  The big mosques I've been to have allowed photography unless it was time to let everyone in for scheduled prayers.

Good Day

First, thank you for posting these interesting photos.

Secondly, I wonder if you could help with some info - I have a water colour painting of the temple at Abu Simbel done (I think) in the 1920s or 1930s. I was under the impression that the temple was submerged when the Aswan dam was filled:

- Is that not correct?

- And why do you refer to the temple as "notorious"?

Please understand that this is a genuine enquiry. I'm not seeking to provoke one of those appalling DPReview rows. 😊

Regards

Michael

I do not typically like videos. That was a Great video. Have always wanted to visit the Middle East. Am more interested in doing so now. Thanks for sharing!

WOW! Fun video. Nice compositions and action. Been there twice and enjoyed seeing the sites again. Short clips left me wanting more time to study the scene, but I understand the purpose of your editing. Shows real skill all around. Congratulations!

Hi Michael,

you know your stuff!  They had to relocate the site in the late '60s above the reservoir at the dam to avoid it getting submerged.  It's absolutely crazy to think they moved a site that large.  I also called Abu Simbel notorious since they are probably the second most famous representations of ancient Egypt other than the pyramids and sphynx of Giza.

@Eaglebeach - if you ever want to go, I'm more than willing to share all my travel notes on Egypt with you.  It's a fascinating place to visit.  Thanks for the kind words about the video!

@rexv - luck you've been there a couple of times!  I am always conflicted about long clips vs short clips as I want to pack all the memories in and tell a story.  I want to actually try my hand at some longer trip style editing at some point.  Thank you for the comments and glad you enjoyed.
