Which kit lens for the X-T20? XC 16-50 or XF 18-55

I am ordering my Fujifilm X-T20 soon and am still hesitating on which kit lens to buy.

  1. XF 18-55mm for $970
  2. XC 16-50mm for $800

Which one should I go with ?

I am more into landscape and architecture photography and I also appreciate that nice bokeh!

I am new to Fuji and am thus only starting to build my lens collection.

I am already thinking about maybe going for a more specific landscape lens like the Samyang 12mm f2.0 and the more common XF 35mm.

Thanks in advance for your feedback and advice!!

Both are good lenses and you will be happy with either of them.

I would choose the 18-55 as it's optically stellar and it's really well made. You can use that lens for years while the 16-50 is made a bit cheaper (plastics).

One more thing: While it's unmarked, the 18-55 does have the advantage of having an aperture ring. Since you're new to Fuji and most of the lenses have aperture rings, you could use this lens to get used to that. It's a pleasure to use.

Unmarked aperture rings are useless. It's just a half-baked attempt at being retro with no ergonomic benefit.  It is much faster to change apertures by flicking a finger wheel on the body as with any pro DSLR instead of having to use a second hand to rotate a laggy ring.

If on the other hand, the aperture settings are marked on the ring, there is a genuine benefit because Fuji's don't have display on the top deck to display the aperture without looking at the EVF or LCD.

Where can you buy the x-t20 with the 18-55 for $970?

Yeah! But somehow I am still hesitating with the X-T10 which would be for 600 for 16-50 or 800 for 18-55

Any advice?

Well, like many things in life, there are choices.  I much prefer to shoot aperture priority using the lens aperture ring. I find it ergonomically easier. As I always use the EVF, never the LCD, and the aperture is shown in the EVF, markings on the lens would be unseen anyway.  I accept that if one wanted to adjust settings before shooting it would be advantageous, but I understand that for a variable aperture zoom markings are not viable. I confess I don't know why, but no doubt some one will enlighten me.

It's great to have the choice.

Anyway, to the OP's question, I find the 18-55 gives excellent results. Good luck with your choice.

I would never buy the X-T10 for only 170 bucks saving.

You will get better results with primes, have a look at the 23mm F1.4 or the 16mm F1.4.

For the price differences you are talking about, I would not even consider the X-T10. The X-T20 has 24 MP, 4k video, and a touch screen, just to name 3 of the improvements. Well worth the cost difference you are quoting IMHO.

Regarding the lens, I have heard much better feedback about the 18-55mm lens.

I have a constant aperture zoom, the 10-24mm f4 without any markings on the aperture rings. There are no excuses for this. I find it really slows me down, especially when the setting lags slightly when rapidly rotating the ring. When a scene is changing rapidly you want to be able to set the ring before raising the camera to your eye, at which time you focus on composition and take the shot instead of watching in the EVF for the aperture setting take it's time as you spin the ring.

Media Markt, they have a -18% promo on every camera item in their store. But you have to go in the store to buy the X-T20, it isn't available on their site

And between a X-T20 with 18-55 for 970 vs X-T1 with 18-55 for 1330 ? Still X-T20?

So what is the price in EUR for the X-T20 with 18-55 and X-T20 with 16-50 at Media Markt? Is it in all Media Markt shops, or only in specific ones, and do you have any idea how long the offer is valid?

I agree about the benefit of aperture ring markings, but disagree that an unmarked ring is useless. Or at least, not useless to everyone. The lens aperture rings were one of the big Fuji attractions for me when I started researching which camera to buy. I'm enjoying going old-school with my X-T20 and XF 18-55. As soon as I discovered the XC had no ring it was off the list.
