Noisy 24mm STM

I just bought a used Canon 24mm f2.8 STM lens from Henry's in Canada.  It looks almost new.

While testing it, the focus seems noisy with a distinctly audible whine as it focuses.  It seems a lot noiser than my other STM zooms.  I'm guessing the focus noise could quite easily be picked up by the on-camera mic.

Is this normal, or should I compare it to a new lens at the store, or return it?

I love my three STM zooms, and am impressed with how quiet they are.

Perfectly normal! It's a great little lens, enjoy!

Thanks for the response.  I'm just surprised, considering how quiet my other STM lenses are, and the fact that all STM lenses are touted for video use due to their quiet operation.

The test pics are great so far.

Glad to hear it.

The 40 STM is pretty noisy too.

The three primes (24,40,50) have a different smaller STM drive type that is not silent.

I was also a bit surprised at the sound of the 24 AF during my first video test, but indeed the STM drive must be different. The 50 is quieter than the 24, but the 18-55 and 55-250 kit zooms are silent by comparison. The flipside is the 24 and 50 go together with my SL1 in a tiny carry bag that makes it very easy to go everywhere.

The photo quality is awesome with this lens, and it even has decent bokeh at f/2.8 up close.

Ah, that explains it then.

How far away is the store?

Take it back and compare it with a new lens.

Then decide if any noise is OK, or spend the extra and buy a new one.

Oakville

If Oakville is the neatrest store, take money. Lots of stuff on sale before they move.

Re: Noisy 24mm STM

It is noisy as is the EF 40 f2.8 and  the 50 f1.8 STM. All the other STM lenses which are zooms are whisper quiet.

The difference is that the small lenses have a geared STM implementation, and you hear those gears. The EF-M 22mm f2 also is a geared STM lens.
