m43 hits the high spots in "sea" challenge
Mar 2, 2017
First was polwee in an E-M5 with a very atmospheric shot.
Fourth was swisscowboys with an E-PM2 with another very atmospheric shot with great composition. Evening or dawn, swiss?
And so it went on.
But I must say, the shot that really grabbed my eye was Dutch Newchurch in 10th with an E-510 4/3, a wonderful three quarters front shot of a big yacht with a huge foresail pounding through the waves.
Just such a shot, but taken closer and from a lower viewpoint, was featured in a Penguin book of yachts I had when I was a youngster -- the caption was something like: The America's Cup challenger, Endeavour, thunders past on a starboard tack. Might have been Endeavour IV. Sir Whateverhisface Lipton, the te squillionaire, had a series of yachts named Endeavour which unsuccessfully challenged for the America's Cup. Of course, in those days, the Americans cheated -- if you wanted to challenge, you had to sail your challenger to America, so the Endeavours and other challengers were robust, ocean going yachts that were not only capable of sailing across the Atlantic, but actually did so. The local challenger was an off-shore racing yacht -- able to be much lighter, built for speed rather than heavy seas.
So blow me down, I read Dutch's caption and his picture is of a replica of one of the American yachts which would have defeated the Endeavour. Shame on your, Dutch! LOL.
By the way, you could do with taking a lesson from the Penguin caption writer. Your title is pretty tame.
I was also pretty taken with the sailing picture which made 2nd, but the Nikon wielder who took it didn't straighten his horizon, which would have had the added benefit of making the featured boat lean more, nor did he think about composition -- I would suggest his picture would have been more powerful with a bit cropped off the left to put the viewer's focus even more strongly on the featured boat.
PS: I made 91st out of 100. See, it took 90 of them to beat me! LOL.
PPS: I have had a romantic interest in yachts my whole life, but I have never stepped onto on, let alone sailed in one.
PPPS: Oh wait, I have sailed in outrigger sailing canoes in New Guinea. Dang! Forgot those scanned pix I had of outrigger sailing canoe races! I should have entered one of those! Watch out polwee, swiss, Dutch, and the rest! I have you in my sights for next time!
