First video with E-M1 MkII - Democratic Republic of Congo - Gorillas and Volcano Lava Lakes
18

Thought people may want to see how the video comes out with the E-M1 Mark II. Obviously it held up really well in the mountain jungle and freezing volcano summit temperatures with no issue. Super happy with the AF speed and the ability to shoot 4K. Wish it did 60p at 4k, but I'll take what I got for now. A few shots were taken with a Mavic and GoPro, but most of it was shot with the Mark II.

I commented before that I really thought this was well done. Did you use a  12-100mm?

That was a beautiful video and you should submit it to Olympus the next time they have a contest as IMO it is a winner!!!

Hey Paul

thanks again

Don't own the 12-100mm but it's a pretty appealing lens for the travel I do.  I'm VERY tempted.  I used a combo of the 12-40mm 2.8, 40-150mm 2.8, and the PL100-400mm.

Thanks Bobby and RRSVP for the kind words too!

While there will be some who need to tick off all the boxes - even a few who can actually use yet higher resolution+frame rate, this certainly is as high a quality of video as most of us will ever need.

Agreed. Beautiful video quality but more importantly the enjoyment of your travel really comes through in the production.

I just got back from travelling central and east Africa for a month and a half.  Was in DRC around the end of January.  I booked the whole trip myself without any tour companies.  If you want to do Virunga specifically, I would highly recommend just booking through the site.  I can help you if you have specifics and want to visit that part of the world.  I did use Kilidove Tours for my safari in the Serengeti and they were phenomenal.

Wow! Incredibly marvelous!

That had to be the best mountain gorilla footage I have ever viewed.

You have some real talent.

Thanks for the information as trip like this is on my bucket list. Last summer we went to Machu Picchu and we loved it. After viewing your video I think I have to save up for the E-M1 Mark ll and either the 100-400mm zoom or the Oly 300mm f4 first before doing a trip like this.

Gorillas and Volcano Lava Lakes Audio
1

The "Congoleo" song was good as an introduction, and perhaps to close, the video.  Was there no on-location audio worth sharing?

Road traffic, motor cycle, talkative driver or guide, footsteps in the bush, apes snorting and munching, lava gurgling or rumbling, visitors oohing and ahing (like primate relatives).

Did it challenge the Mavic's battery life to send it high enough to do the volcano flyover?  Any problem in calibration?  I'd always worry that, at an unusual destination, drone controls might simply not work.

The travelers could be mistaken for Hugo van Lawick and Jane Goodall, also fond of apes.  Did the gorillas appear at a known "haunt"?  Were they accustomed to getting food from visitors?  Or you'd think they might shun humans with guns and cameras only.   I presume the face masks were to protect both visitors and apes, but was there a particular infection at risk?

Thanks for sharing the video of the Congo....an area many of us have never seen and will likely not visit.

You video didn't look that sharp to me and I don't know if it was because of high ISO or poor light, but very disappointing for 4K which I have used from the MK2 that I own?

It looked extremely sharp on my iMac's 5k 27 inch screen.

Great video. I can never get enough of monkey or ape photography. Although I do find the music a bit loud and distracting - but that is more personal taste.

You can always turn off the volume on your computer and play Bruce Springsteen's Jungleland on your audio system.
