Wide angle conversion lenses

Hey

Does anyonw have any experience with wide angle conversion lenses on the Canon 17-55 f2.8 lens?

Somthing like this: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/4113usm-rhL.jpg

The thing is, the lens have a 77mm diameter and im afraid it will further suffer bad vignetting.

Ive used one on a 18mm lens with a 49mm ring, and it surprisingly well.

Its quite expensive if its really crap.

Im a light backpacker and just came across this, and wondered if i could a few ounces of weight.

There is usually a market for anything if priced right, and there is an actual need.  Don't let a high or low price be an overriding factor in determining value and quality.

In regards to your question, no, except for a Canon close-up lens, I have never used an accessory of that kind on my SLR lenses.  On the other hand, I have used wide and tele attachments on a P&S.  The results were mixed at best.

If there is no downside to returning the product if not satisfied, I see no reason why you shouldn't give it a try however.  Be sure to give us a report later on.

Re: Wide angle conversion lenses

Not sure what this thing does, but it looks like a single element filter.

These types of screw on front elements are close-up lens. Like reading glasses or magnifier lens, they shorten the focal length of the original lens. The field of view is wider, but you cannot focus to infinity.

Wide angle converter needs multiple elements. They are usually designed for a particular P&S camera. I have never seen any generic 77mm diameter converter.

Anyway, why would you put a Coke bottle quality glass in front of a $800+ premium lens?

Re: Wide angle conversion lenses

I can understand the attraction, but I can almost guarantee that conversion lens will be pretty nasty. Wide angles are already incredibly complex engineering marvels and a fair number already barely make the cut. Slapping another "iffy" lens on the front is bound to cause problems.
