Samples: 50mmF2 vs 35mmF2 vs 18-55 "kit"
2

I just received my 50mmF2 lens today, and promptly put it on my X-T2 to take a few comparison shots between it and my 18-55m kit lens. I also threw in a few from my 35mmf2 for comparison. Excuse the crappy lighting and composition - I was really just trying to get a sense of the boken capabilities with each lens wide open at roughly the same distance.

My conclusion: I haven't decided yet whether I'll be shipping the 50mmF2 back - gotta play with it a bit more before deciding. I can certainly see the advantage of the 50mmF2 for subject isolation when it's wide open. That said, when shooting at f4 or so, the 18-55mm "kit" lens holds it own pretty well. The 50mm sure is beautifully built though. Autofocus speed is fast - slightly faster than the 18-55mm, but slightly slower than the 35mmF2. Size looks to be about 30% larger than the 35mm, but both of the primes are tiny compared to the 18-55. Fuji makes good lenses.

At f4.0 both lenses at 50 mm looks equal sharp. I have both and keep them because i like the size and weight of the 50 mm. And 2 stops more and wr.

Say, Steve Austin had plastic surgery? He looks the same just like in the 70's. Looks good though.  I'm a big fan by the way.

Here are my 2 cents.

Yes, ship it back. Here's why:

1) The difference to the 35/2 is marginal. Have a look at your framing: The 35mm is framed wider. Frame it exactly the way you did with the 50 and the bokeh will improve further a little bit.

2) The 35 angle of view is way more convenient to work with. You can reframe your subject be moving around a few meters. With the 50 you need to move more and cannot interact with your subject as easily.

#2 may be irrelevant if you shoot a) dead stuff with b) endless space around in equal directions

Fuji makes good lenses.

Yes, sometimes. But mine are either very good or exceptional.

Have you looked at the Fuji 56mm? It is a proper prime unlike the F2 primes.

The Fuji "Proper Primes" correct for distortions optically, the small F2 primes do not they use software within the camera to correct quite large distortions, this fundamentally affects image quality, they lack microcontrast and tonal graduation.

Do you have a source for this info? I would like to read more about this before I decide which primes to buy. Thanks!
