From all MFT-Cameras you've owned: which's shutter sound do you like best?

To me the camera's shutter sound is probably the key-criteria if I can fall in love with a camera or not.

Here is my list in descending order:

E-M1 > E-P5 > E-M5 > E-PM2 > E-P2 > E-M10 (ii) > E-M10

From the E-M1 to the E-P2 I really like the shutter sound. Unfortunately the E-M10 (ii) and the E-M10 I didn't enjoy much because of only that reason.

I am really interested in your list, specially when it comes to newer models.

I really like the noise of both my EM-5ii and GX80.
But I only very rarely hear the shutter, which is when I turn it off e-shutter and use a flash.

Lumix G85, because the sound is barely audible.

Kodak S-1 > Olympus E-PL5 > Olympus OM-D E-M5 II > Panasonic GM1

The Kodak has a very loud (and prone to failure) shutter, but it sounds "real" like a film SLR.

The E-PL5 is also somewhat loud but reliable.

Te E-M5 II has a very quiet shutter but still barely real sounding.

The GM1 shutter sound is very artificial and wimpy sounding - might as well use silent shutter all the time.

Pen-F.

Just used my E-M1 today after not using it for a couple of months - couldn't believe how much noisier it was compared to the Pen F.

It's much quieter than anything else.

EM-1 mk ii > EM-5 mk ii >>>>>> EM-1

The EM-1mk ii and EM-5 mk ii mechanical shutters are both very soft and solid sounding. The EM-1 sounds like a bad radio play sound effect. It's so loud that it scares birds away, even from 40 feet away. It's sounds loose with metallic rattling.

Definitely not the G7!

Frankly, it is embarrassing using the camera in a bird hide alongside Canon shooters (as I did in January).

All of the m4/3 cameras I have are far louder and much more annoying than even FF Canons - which is interesting, given they have to flap a mirror as well as operate a shutter.

If the G85 and GH5 are quieter, it is well overdue.

I really dislike the GM1 shutter, it is so flimsy and fragile sounding. Everytime I hear it I imagine how the shutter blades are so thin and weak that they likely go broken on next actuation.

I don't now get that. That other m4/3 cameras you have are louder than DSLR cameras?

I haven't heard a single m4/3 camera that is as loud as any DSLR, even when DSLR is set mirror up position for just shutter.

For me it is not the shutter sound

It is the smell. I always smell a camera before I buy one and if I don't like the smell, I don't buy it. It is a serious deal breaker.

On a more serious note, for my photography needs, the shutter sound that I prefer is that of a silent electronic shutter.

Not a clue

I guess everyone has things that are above and below the radar of what matters to them. I can honestly say that the only camera that I've used that has had a dealbreakingly bad shutter has been the Sony A7r.  Even the regular A7 (which was pretty loud and crunchy) I stopped noticing after a few days with it.

As to M43?  Of all of the M43 bodies I have owned in the past six years (12!) I can honestly say I have absolutely no idea what any of them sounded like, except the current two I have when I am actually out shooting with them.  As a matter if fact, since i currently use the GX8 in mostly e-shutter mode, I often find one of my fingers accidentally blocking the little speaker on the left side of the body that produces the artificial shutter sound, and I wonder where it went, until I remember and shift my grip a little. This is actually a frequent source of amusement for me, by the way. I just think it's funny when it happens, no idea why.

So, I couldn't tell you which camera of all of them had the best shutter sound.  They were all within my (admittedly broad) acceptance range, so I simply didn't notice.

Re: From all MFT-Cameras you've owned: which's shutter sound do you like best?

This is my list:

Em5 II   ->  EM5 ->  PEN-F ->  GX8 -> EM1 ->  PM2

I really liked the two EM5.x shutters s from the very first moment.

EM1 was a disappointment regarding noise (but the handling is very nice)

The new shutters in EM5-ii and PEN-F are very silent, which is good to know as I had some bad experience with shutter shock.

I think the new Pana shutters might be very nice but the only one I had for a short time was the GX8 which is not the latest implementation.

E-M5II

However, since the electronic shutter has increasingly faster readouts, I use the mechanical shutter only very rarely.

Electronic shutter, particularly in burst mode

First curtain electronic and stepper motor to drive shutter is very quiet. Seems to do well at supressing vibrations. My EM5 sounds horrible in comparison. The close .. open .. close action of the shutter is noisy and doesn't help to reduce vibrations. I wish they had given it a firmare update for an electronic first curtain.
