cheapest zoom cinema lens for nikon f mount?

I know rokinon makes the cheapest cinema prime lens for f mount.  But i would like a suggestion for the cheapest zoom cinema lens for nikon f mount.  And i mean a zoom lens with cinema design like parfocal, declicked aperture, minimal breathing, etc.  is there such a thing at all?

Re: cheapest zoom cinema lens for nikon f mount?

I thought that was an exceptionally interesting question, and a little google search turned up a company that modifies existing lenses for cine work for a seemingly very accessible rate (compared to the $$$$ cine lenses I see out there). Possible for some zooms, they say.

Re: cheapest zoom cinema lens for nikon f mount?

I also saw on ebay some "custom" chinese lens but have no idea how well they work:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Customized-cine-lens-sigma18-35mm-f1-8-ZF-cinematics-V2-for-Nikon-DSLR-Camera-/272543042079?hash=item3f74d4ca1f:g:nY8AAOSwPe1Tzhy0

not that cheap. Considering that the Fujinon MK18‑55mm T2.9 is $3700, that ebay item is not quite a bargain at all.

You could shoot a film all day with just prime lenses of course.  But short of moving the camera closer to the subject on a dolly on the fly, without a zoom lens, you won't be able to have the "zoom" effect if the scene calls for such effect

Very short focus throw on that Sigma. It isn't going to be fun in manual focus I think.

Re: cheapest zoom cinema lens for nikon f mount?

yeah,  its obviously a still lens repurposed thinly....  which is why i wonder if there is one available...  i guess given a lot of these requirements like parfocal, 200 degree focus tuning with precise distance marks, constant t stop over the zoom range, minimize breathing, does not allow for a way to make any zoom cheaply?

one thing that is good about nikon is that the f mount has many legacy MF nikon has. as well as the fact that they have the manual aperture ring.   A lot of them also have constant aperture.    if you are a canon user, you don't have much option for manual lens at all.

Its probably cheaper/better just to buy a Sony A7 and then go for an E-mount lens

However, the problem is that the fastest manual constant aperture nikkor zoom is Nikkor Zoom 28-50mm f/3.5.... Not very fast probably have a t stop of above 4.0. also the zoom action is push pull, not ring turning.

So i don't know if there is any "cheap" zoom cinema lens for nikon. Unless i am missing a lens?

Does this mod includes making the lens parfocal and also changing out the focus to more fine tuning 200 degrees? doesn't look like it...

I don't think so either, but if you start out with an old AI lens then the long focus throw comes built in. Zoom is going to be a tough one though. My approach would be to use a prime, shoot 4K and then zoom in post when rendering to 1080p.

all those nikon MF lens have push pull zoom. this by itself is already a no no for cine lens since cine lenses are internal focus.

All the latest nikon G lens without the aperture rings are useless without extensive mod to convert to having aperture ring.

A starting point could be the 28-70mm f/2.8 AF-S lens

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/2870afs.htm

or this 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/80200.htm

The distance scale on that lens as it is is useless. These two lens are somewhat fast enough but still relatively slow for most cine lens. at least they do have the proper three rings implements. but they would need to be rehoused. each of these are around $1k before mod. so i imagine it would cost probably almost $3k by the time they are modded properly?

Re: cheapest zoom cinema lens for nikon f mount?

I have been watching movies from a different perspective ever since i got a little into cine lenses.  Seems like the large majority of scenes in a film are shot with a prime lens.  Seems like  scenes that require the use of a zoom lens for a zoom live effect is not that frequent.

It's such a refreshing thing to see movies from a filming prospective if you slow down to think about it when looking at each scene...
