SX260 HS: Is it sharp though the zoom range ?

Looking for a zoom compact to compliment my S95. The ELPH 330 HS is proving difficult to find a good one for a reasonable price.

Is the SX240/260 a good choice for image quality or is there another vintage compact I should look at for a 10x - 20x optical zoom ?   (I'm also open to other brands).

Trying to find an older camera and spend around $100 or under.  Thank you.

Re: SX260 HS: Is it sharp though the zoom range ?

I've had an SX240 since spring 2013. I'd say the lens is as good as can be expected for such a large zoom range in a small camera. The lens on mine is a bit soft on the right hand side at 25mm but I don't think it was like that when new. Mine has had a few knocks over the years and there's a bit of dust in the lens but I'm still happy with it.

Here are a few straight out of camera shots that I took whilst out for a walk last weekend. They're nothing special but hopefully will give you an idea of what to expect. The first two were shot in aperture priority mode with auto ISO, super fine jpegs and My Colors set to off. The last one was shot in auto mode.

25mm, f4, 1/250 sec, ISO 100

194mm, f5.6, 1/20 sec, ISO400

500mm, f6.8, 1/160 sec, ISO160

Excellent camera. I had one and sold it off for a Panasonic and regret not keeping it. Very good bang for the buck camera.
