Button customization for B+W

So I've had my K-3ii for a couple of weeks. Have the DA HD 16-85 ED DC WR and the 55-300 ED PLM WR lenses...the Tamrac 3444 to carry it all in...seems I'm good to go.

Heading to Colorado for a music/ski festival soon, and I want to try my hand at B+W while in the mountains.

Is there a way to customize one of the user settings, or perhaps a button, so I can switch to B+W/monochrome quickly?  I don't want to go thru the numerous menus to change it on the fly.

Being of the "old school" age bracket, I can pretty much visualize how something will look in B+W. I know I can convert later, but I don't want to do that. The less processing the better.

Anyone have a setting for that, or any real world experience with this? I'd appreciate the help, and others may benefit as well.

Thanks in advance.

You should be able to assign a U mode with the Monochrome custom image setting.

Be aware that doing your own B&W in post allows you to make specific colors darker/brighter so that you can dial in how you want the finished product to look, giving the task to the camera just means you get what you get.

I shoot raw, but I think in B&W most of the time.

I don't use the user modes on the K5 or K1 - I just toggle it mono on or off via the 4 way controller. Depending on my mood I'll have it one click to cool tone, or one click to warm tone, and typically have one of the milder filters (e.g. Yellow - Red is too strong).
Because I have the DNG codec on Windows I can copy the preview out to a JPEG file if I want the "straight from the camera" image
When  I load the DNG into lightroom, it disregards the preview setting and I can blend colours , set contrast / levels and curves as I want (and obviously process the image as colour! ) , I've created presets  to mimic the in-camera settings. I can adjust from there.

Hi

Set up the camera exactly as you want it - B&W, and the settings for the B&W jpeg including contrast and filtering and auto DR. Also set your preferred Settings for shake reduction, exposure program, ISO range and so on. Then save all as a user setting (U1 or U2 or U3). You can label it so you can find it easily. Then just swing the left-hand-top dial around to the U1, U2 or U3 when you want to shoot B&W.

Personally I'd make it save a RAW file as well as the B&W jpeg, so if I wanted a colour image or a different style of B&W conversion I could do it with post-processing.
