New (again) to Canon

i was recently given a Rebel Kiss X (D400 or T4i here in Canada) by a friend from Korea.  I've already got a system of Nikon lenses for which I'd like to try an adapter to see whether I might want to seriously try some Canon cameras.

Does anybody have experience with Nikon to EOS adapters?  I've already sent a 3D-print job to the local library, but I'm considering an AF-chipped or standard adapter such as Fotodiox.  Will I be messing with the rules of the universe??

(I'm not adverse to Canon -- in fact, I was once one of the world's foremost promoters of the Canon FD 35mm system when I started a popular discussion group on Yahoo Groups nearly 20 years ago.  The truth is that I began to migrate to Nikon using Tamron Adaptall lenses in the 80's and never used an EOS camera before.  I used Nikon and Canon together for years, but Nikon -- and Fuji/Nikon since the digital era.)

PS. Since a couple of days ago, what started off as an inexpensive experiment has already become a contagion -- I found a used 10D (6mp from 2003) with grip in excellent shape for only $85 and couldn't resist.  One of the main reasons is because older dSLRS work well for infrared photography with an IR filter.  My D800 simply sucks at that!

Canon 650D = T4i (Nikon has D+number, Canon had number+D)

Well, I don't know. I am confident the Canons and the Nikons are good cameras. But I would not spend too much money on a combination of the two (like Nikon lenses on a Canon body).

Depending on goal and budget I'd rather either

* buy some simple lenses for the 10D (that one is acient by now) and this rebel

or

* put your money in a second hand Nikon, perhaps have it adapted for IR photography.

But, then again, I don't think such an adapter will alter gravity or end the solar system during our lifetime.

All in my humble opinion of course!

Re: New (again) to Canon

Welcome to Canon again.  I was using Olympus DSLR cameras and then started using Canon DSLR cameras.  I was going to use Nikon DSLR cameras many years ago but the floods in SE Asia reduced availability, so here I am.

You might want to look at some used STM kit lenses for your Canon T4i (650D) camera.  They are pretty good and inexpensive (like about $150 USD).  Often people sell them when they purchase other more expensive lenses.

Re: New (again) to Canon

Canons and Nikons (and Fujis!) operate very differently (enough to drive you crazy at times), so you might want to test the waters a bit first before jumping in whole hog.

Here's a great way to dip your toe into the Canon waters without breaking the bank...

Get yourself the (over-achieving) little 50mm f/1.8 STM ($125 USD), put it on the T4i and shoot everything in sight. See if it makes the same impression on you as it did me.

If you like that enough, take the next step and upgrade the body (to one with Dual Pixel autofocus), or add another native lens.

Personally I'd rather go this route than try to adapt a foreign lens system, esp with the kinda smallish viewfinder. I did like my T4i very much, and shot everything from Macro (ahem, MICRO)...

Have fun with your new toy!
