Wow, you went to the south poll with a light kit - i imagine luggage requirements are pretty strict - but I feel your pain...

I'm saving money for this kit
2

I didn't purchase much but slowly sold my canon 5D and few zoom and primes I had. Now surviving with 550D and 3 basic lenses. Probably this December I would switch to Fuji setup.

2x X-T20 bodies
I like X-T2 If i save more money. I want to have identical body and I don't want compromise in lens as bodies tend to go older earlier. I need two bodies as I'm looking to shoot events as well along with my travel photography.

23mm f/1.4
Lovely lens. f/2 focus faster and very small profile. But in APS-C having f/1.4 is good for subject separation specially for environmental portraits.

56mm f/1.2
Amazing portrait lens and f/1.2

14mm f/2.8
I know 16mm is faster but as I have 23mm I would go for 14mm. I would mainly use this for landscapes and architecture so subject separation isn't necessary and mostly I will use tripod any way.  This is also be used for group shots (which can't be compacted with 23mm) I know wide will give distortion but this will be used for really big groups (If I get in to that situation only)

These lenses are the real reason I got interested to Fuji over Sony. I like these lenses. I choose system based on Lenses not on body.

Re: Your choice of Fuji's Trinity prime kit ?

I'd probably go with just these two lenses:

  • 14mm f2.8: fantastic lens for landscapes; very sharp across the frame, small and light.
  • 35mm f1.4: great for general photography and portrait; there is something about the rendering at f1.4 that makes it very pleasing (especially portraits); small and light for the aperture.

I recently went to the Azores and my kit was these two above + the 18-55 f2.8-4.

Of the two prime sets you list, I would definitely go 16/1.4, 23/2, and 56/1.2.  In fact, these are the three primes I will take with me on my 3.5-week vacation to Japan.  The other three lenses I will bring are zooms --- 10-24, 16-55, and 55-200.

If I wanted the smallest/lightest three prime set with no zooms, I can see why the 14/2.8 would be a great option for its size and being wider than the 16/1.4.  If I really wanted something wider than 16mm, I would try the Rokinon/Samyang 12mm.  The three lenses would still fit in my current favorite small prime bag, the Peak Design Sling 5L.

I prefer the 56/1.2 over the 60 macro, because I do shoot portraits, I want the option of f/1.2.  For portraits, I don't care if the 60 macro can turn out to be a bit sharper than the 56.

Stop. Listen to Me....

You came to the right place my friend.  I went though this 4  or 5 years ago -- the week the XT-1 came out -- can't remember.

Fuji glass is the best in the world, but they need to update their old fast awesome primes with the slow motors and clunky mechanics and no WR.  Great glass but need a mechanical and WR update.  Come on Fuji!

But get the little 23/35/50 F2s.  Awesome.

Get the best prime in the world -- The Mighty 16.

Get the 56, the best portrait lens West of the Mississippi.

Get the 90 -- the second best Fuji prime behind the 16.

Get the new bazooka -- the incredible 80 and have some OIS macro fun (and portraits).

Get the 10-24 because you need that width for travel.  Get the 55-200 because you need that reach for travel and can just toss it in the bag.

Get the 50-140.  It is the best 70-210 type 2.8 lens the Universe.

Get the awesome Brick.  It is the best 24-70 2.8 type lens on the Planet.

Some will say get the 14, but no.  And no 18, pancake, 60 or non XF please.

Oh heck ... Go ahead and get the 14 is you continue to resist getting the absolutely essential 10-24.

Listen to me..... Look at this mess in my living room!

Re: I'm saving money for this kit

I like your kit.

If you have not done so already, be sure to try the X-T20 in a store first to make sure it fits comfortably in your hands.  Be sure to try the largest lens you'll probably buy (e.g., 16/1.4, 16-55) and make sure your fingers fit comfortably between the finger grip and the lens barrel.

I had to use a thumb rest to make the X-T20 work for me.

If I can only own one lens for each focal length (e.g., 23/1.4 vs. 23/2; 56/1.2 vs. 50/2), I would definitely get the older/faster versions.  It's APS-C and I want the fastest options with the shallowest DOF I can get.  23/1.4 and 56/1.2 are fast enough for what I'd use these lenses for.

Between the 14 and the 10-24, I went 10-24 for 10mm and the OIS and the 14mm isn't an inexpensive lens (e.g., it's not under $500).

16 1.4

35 f2

50 f2 (or 56 if spending more)

Love the f2s but the 16 1.4 is one of the best 24mm I have ever used.  35 and 50 f2 keep it small and light  23 f2 too close to 16.

I have my 16 on for all hikes, and landscape

35 for general purpose, street, kids around the neighborhood etc..

50 or 56 for portrait/speciality

Versatility vs specialisation

OwenJ wrote:

-14mm f2.8 + 23mm f2 + 60mm macro

I think that it is the more versatile kit, allowing you to get wet wide, to shoot portraits, macro and "normal" shots, yet with decent speed. The 60mm is probably not the fastest lens to focus but macro is MF anyway, and portrait should be OK. This kit would however make sports difficult.

-16mm f1.4 + 23mm f2 + 56mm f1.2

This is a more thin-DOF maniac kit. It is more specialised thus less versatile. And it is much more expensive as well. You could add a Samyang FE to the first kit for even more versatlity. But if you need extreme subject isolation, go for it.

The point actually is : do you shoot (or want to shoot) macro or do you require extreme subject isolation ?

We all know that a lot of Fuji users move down from high end full frame DSLR kits for the reason of downsizing. No exception, I moved from a nikon D800E, and i'm a prime shooter mainly at 24mm, 35mm and 85mm. I used to own a 300mm f2.8 but I am not using it that often.

Considering IQ + weight,

Would you prefer:

-14mm f2.8 + 23mm f2 + 60mm macro

or

-16mm f1.4 + 23mm f2 + 56mm f1.2

I really need a 35mm equivalent focal length, so 23mm always has a spot in my kit. Considering the weight f2 is a much better choice for me personally.

The question comes down to the wide end, i would prefer a 24mm equivalent light lens, i.e., 16mm f2/f2.8. However, 16mm f1.4 is almost double the weight of 14mm and f1.4 isnt something i would need for a wide angle lens.

At the tele-end, again, 56mm is the ultimate portrait lens ( i wont consider 90mm due to its weight). However, 60mm seems to be a steal lens at half of its weight and price. I understand its slow focus and relatively slow aperture, but dual purpose lens is always a plus.

what do you guys think if u can only have 3 primes ?

I um’d and ah’d over this for nearly 6 months looking at 16, 56, 90

eventually sanity prevailed and I ordered X-T2 with 16-55 and the 90. Few months ago added the 10-24.

very happy with my decision and suits my style of shooting.

The only thing that would make me ditch my Nikon D810 If a good close up macro and macro flash which Fuji does not have at the moment. Still happy though, as I have said before it’s choosing the right tool for the job and there is no “one size fits all”

Re: Your choice of Fuji's Trinity prime kit ?

Hi all, a long overdue post, but better late than never. I am a Canon full frame and Fuji user, both have different purposes so I'm not conflicted. I own a "trinity +1" prime kit for the Fuji. I value aperture over other considerations and so I own the f1.4 versions of the 16mm, 23mm and 35mm, plus the 56mm f1.2. I can either take all of these for my XPro2, plus a 55-200mm zoom if needed, or I can pick a skinny set depending on my needs. Coming from a full frame DSLR background the Fuji kit is lightweight and small even with the fast lens choice. It all fits into an Ona Union Street bag easily along with a flash, charger, filters etc and this is light and small in comparison to my equivanent Canon L lens kit bag. It was an easy decision for me on what to equip myself with as even the big Fuji stuff is actually really small in conparison... Cheers.

What's the best focal length  to fill the gap between 16 f1.4 and 90 f2,  why?

That entirely depends on the subjects you shoot, and how you like to compose your shots. How do you visualise perspective? What do you like to shoot, and why?

For me I would pick 23mm or 35mm. Either is good for more subtle context compared to the 16mm, or picking out details less aggressively as the 90mm.
