Your choice of Fuji's Trinity prime kit ?

We all know that a lot of Fuji users move down from high end full frame DSLR kits for the reason of downsizing. No exception, I moved from a nikon D800E, and i'm a prime shooter mainly at 24mm, 35mm and 85mm. I used to own a 300mm f2.8 but I am not using it that often.

Considering IQ + weight,

Would you prefer:

-14mm f2.8 + 23mm f2 + 60mm macro

or

-16mm f1.4 + 23mm f2 + 56mm f1.2

I really need a 35mm equivalent focal length, so 23mm always has a spot in my kit. Considering the weight f2 is a much better choice for me personally.

The question comes down to the wide end, i would prefer a 24mm equivalent light lens, i.e., 16mm f2/f2.8. However, 16mm f1.4 is almost double the weight of 14mm and f1.4 isnt something i would need for a wide angle lens.

At the tele-end, again, 56mm is the ultimate portrait lens ( i wont consider 90mm due to its weight). However, 60mm seems to be a steal lens at half of its weight and price. I understand its slow focus and relatively slow aperture, but dual purpose lens is always a plus.

what do you guys think if u can only have 3 primes ?

Re: Your choice of Fuji's Trinity prime kit ?

Hi,

I came from APSC DSLRs.  I have a good number of the Fuji primes and they're all good.  I have trouble choosing between kits, but these days, as a landscape and  nature enthusiast, my 'trio' kit is (usually) either

  • the 14mm, 23/1.4 and 60mm, or
  • 16mm, 23/1.4 and 60mm.

I find the 23mm FL indispensible too.  I bought the 23/1.4 before the 23/2 became available.  Light weight and small size appeal to me, and so does sealing.  I don't use f1.4 at all.  However, I haven't been convinced to change over purely from an IQ perspective.  If  ever do buy a 23/2, the old one won't go until I've compared them side by side.  I'd be keeping the one with the best IQ.

I have both the 14mm & 16mm.  Too very fine lenses with no clear winner.  I actually prefer the 16mm for landscape because it doesn't compress the backgrounds and exaggerate the foregrounds quite as much.  And it's sealed.  OTOH, I sometimes prefer the 14mm, especially for architecture.  It's smaller and lighter.  It's better corrected,  takes in more interior space and can be used slightly more effectively for cropping to get parallel verticals.  It takes 58mm filters which more easily double on other lenses.  It's also more flare resistant.  I never actually decide to sell off either......

I find the 60mm a really useful, small, light and sharp lens.  It doubles nicely as a general short tele, portrait and close-focusing lens.  Yes it's AF is a bit slow in low light, and if it hunts,  it hunts a long way like the macro lens it is.  That and fiddly little 39mm filters aside, the more I use it, the more I like it.

I take a 55-200,  an adapted 90mm macro or an adapted 300mm as the fourth lens in my trio depending on what I'm doing.  And if I'm traveling overseas, I take the 18-55 only.

Cheers, Rod

I'd go with 14mm 2.8, 23mm f2, 50mm f2

I 've already owned the 14mm , wider than the 16mm yet smaller; f2.8 does it for me

The 23mm f2 is a must lens , small, cheaper, and WR; I'm waiting for the silver one

Ditto with the 50mm silver; not quite long enough for most portraits but small and cheaper and WR

The alternatives are just too large and heavy

I may add the 35mm f2 to complete the f2 trinity ; however I can see it being used less often than the 23mm

You didn't mention an importance of AF speed and accuracy. If it's not important choice A may be better with size/weight. If it is important go B.

Personally, my trilogy is 16/35f2/90.

If I was only allowed three primes and my budget was open it would be the, 14mm, 60mm and 90mm, of those three I own the 60mm. I cannot afford the rest, although I own the 18mm 27mm and the 60mm.

Thx for mentioning about 50mm f2. It would be a really interesting lens for me if it would have been a 56mm f2. I wont hesitate taking it.

Sadly, Im not really a fan of 75mm equv FL. I felt a bit awkward when I used nifty-fifty on my old apsc-dslrs. My preferred portrait lens range is between 85-135mm, the 10mm does make quite a difference. I dont know if there are people who agree.

Re: Your choice of Fuji's Trinity prime kit ?

Hi,

i'd choose the 16, 23 and 56 but don't ironically don't have any of those lenses. I had the 14 before the 16 was released and it is such a good lens I didn't feel the need to upgrade. 23 is covered by my x100t. I have the 60 but prefer the 90 for any portrait work as it is spectacular.

When I go out I usually stick to 14, 18-55 (or x100t) and 90 as they give me options in terms of focal length and speed.

cheers

Sam

Mine is 14, 23 F1.4, 56 right now.

The F1.4 is that much more useful in low light, and I find the resolution spectacular.

the 56 provides nice isolation, even for objects that are not that close. Very nice for street.

If I was travelling light, then it would be 14, 23 F2, 60.

I've got 14, 23 1.4, 60 and I think it's a very good kit for traveling, landscape and everything else 😊

I'd go with something like... 18mmf2, 35mmf2 and the 90mmf2.

Or... if non-Fujis are okay, I'd prefer something like a Samyang 12mm, 18mmf2 and 35mmf2.

I really enjoy getting up close to the action and I do a lot of street photography.

Why only a Trinity?
7

My choice would be a "Quaternity" :

14mm f/2.8 + 23mm f/1.4 + 35mm f/1.4 + 56mm f/1.2

Why?

Because personally, I love both 35 and 50 mm equivalent, and I don't see why one should exclude the other

Made that choice...

I went for 14mm 2.8; 23mm 1.4; 56mm 1.2

I also have a 35mm bought before the 23mm came out.

Re: Your choice of Fuji's Trinity prime kit ?

I can tell you my trinity choice: 23mm f/2 (on X100T), 35mm f/1.4, 60mm f/2.4 (on X-T10). This saves me one potential lens change, and gives me a little variety in shooting experience. I think the small size/light weight and fun factor of the X100 series is well suited to the 35mm FOV, and often carry that camera alone for street and walk around.

In a hypothetical perfect world, I would have another camera body and never have to change lenses at all.

(Oh,  and no 14mm because I am not a landscape shooter and have close to zero interest in anything wider than 35mm equivalent. My personal trinity has always been 35-50-85 (or 90), and I shot with just 50 and 85 for years on film.)

Sorry to be difficult, but I don't find the 23mm to be either long or short enough for how I shoot.

My pick would be 18/2, 35/1.4, and 56/1.2, and I hopeful that eventually I am able to have an 18/1.4 that is good as the other bright XF primes.

If I had the money, I would get the following.

16 mm (Landscape)

18 mm (street)

56 mm (Portrait)

The 18-55 mm can do everything else in between.

mine is 23/2, 35/1.4 , and 56/1.2

might add a 16/1.4 and 60/2.4, when they go on sale again

but that's as far as I'm going in Fuji-land

never take more than 2-3 out at a time...
