T6i vs. T6s

Hi,

I would like to buy a new camera but I'm not sure which one I should be getting. I'm a relatively new photographer, but I know all the basics. I've been practicing on a rebel xsi until now but I want to upgrade. I was first thinking about a T6i, but after doing some online research, they all say that the T6s is a much better camera. Besides for the top display, what are the real advantages of the T6s over the T6i? Is the top display itself worth the extra $300?

Thanks

IMO you'd be better off asking this in either the Camera Buying Advice or the Canon EOS Rebel forums.

I like the thumb dial a lot on the back, no need to go into menu to change aperture.

I believe there are differences in the auto focus for video also but am not sure, video isn't important to me.

As you get more into photography you ay wish to exercise more control over the camera.

The top display is very helpful in letting you know the current camera settings.  The rear dial is a big help in changing the settings.

Between the two, the T6s is an easier camera to control.  Yes, you can exercise the same control over the T6i, but it take longer (more button presses, etc.).  Speed makes the camera less frustrating to use.

300? There should be just a $100 difference. DPR probably has a comparison of these two cams when they were announced. Look for it.

Thanks

$100 more for body only. I'm looking for the combined standard 18-55mm lens as well.

That explains it! Take a closer look at the listings: the difference in kit prices is due to the fact that the T6s/760D is usually paired with the 18-135 IS STM, NOT the 18-55 IS STM that usually comes with the T6i/750D. That lens (18-135) has a much longer telephoto zoom range, and is usually considered superior optically as well (don't have it, so can't state definitively from personal experience).

Re: T6i vs. T6s

I recently bought the T6S and have no regrets.  If price is a factor, check out the Canon refurbished online store.  My T6S was a refurb, and came with both the 18-135 and 55-250 STM lenses, plus a one year warranty on everything.  Total cost was $859, which I thought was a very reasonable price.  You get a plain white box instead of the retail box, but everything looked brand new and worked perfectly.

Rumor has it that Canon will announce the new T7i and 77D (replacing T6i & T6S) sometime before CP+, which will start on Feb 23.

You may like the new cameras, or you may see price drop on the current ones. Either way, don't make any buying decision unless you need a camera now.

You got a really good deal.

I also just got the T6s, upgrading my T1i. I bought an international model, no warranty, on Amazon for US $678. Then I bought a 15-85, used for $392.

To me the dial makes the operation easier so the slightly higher price was worth it.

You may like the new cameras, or you may see price drop

unlikely since they have already come down in price over their lifetime, making room for the 7series normal new pricing. That's the fallacy of hoping a new model will drop existing prices. It won't

on the current ones. Either way, don't make any buying decision unless you need a camera now.

the second control dial is worth the extra $100 the T6s costs over the T6i.  and watch out for what bundle you get - there are stores bundling NON-STM lenses (you want the STM versions) or adding in lenses or extras you may have no interest in buying.

Re: T6i vs. T6s

Image quality is the same on the two cameras. Both have the same much better AF system than the T5i/700D. The top plate is useful, except (of course) you can only see it when you take your eye away from the vf (or rear screen if using live view). I don't think the thumb wheel is as useful as it sounds - it's not as good a thumb wheel as on the 5D/7DII, etc - it's smaller and fiddlier - doesn't stand as proud of the camera back as those others.

Given that IQ is the same, get whichever seems to be the best deal, especIally if you're looking to buy it in kit form. But make sure you understand which lens you're getting - review the range of 18-? lenses, noting all the parameters - and the. Check that you've actually got the right lens!

(I have a T6i as a light travel camera to back up my 6D, and I'm very happy with both of them.)
