New PC and SPP6x
4

I recently renewed my PC. I based it somewhat off of the $4K Mac Pro specs.

CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 (8 core, 2.4GHz, 20M cache) http://ark.intel.com/products/83356/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2630-v3-20M-Cache-2_40-GHz

Graphics: Nvidia Quadro K2200 4gbs http://www.pny.com/NVIDIA-Quadro-K2200

Memory: 32GB

1TB SSD

I didn't buy it to run SPP6.x, but I was curious.

8-12 seconds to load an actual pixel file into an editing window from the original's folder. Quattro files edit in real time and save to 16bit tiff in about 3 seconds. It felt almost normal. These times are using SPP6.3. SPP6.5.1 doesn't support my graphics cards. Whether this was the reason or not, 6.5.1 took 28-30 seconds to load an actual pixel into an editing window and was unworkably slower in editing, zooming in and out, etc..

My new machine has hyperthreading et al.. and is specifically tuned for heavy calculation fluid modeling. Graphic environment is set for 3d video editing. The odd thing is that when SPP did hang up - let's say while changing color mode it took 20+ sec. - no more than 4GB of RAM were ever utilized. The cores did top out at 100% several times, but they ran mostly at 15%-45% while editing.

On another note, tired of slippery cameras? Try this amazing material. Choose rubber. https://talongungrips.com/other-grips/material/large-sheet-5x7.html   I just put it on my DP2x. Its like glued to my hand! Really.

PS Please try to restrain yourself from suggesting what's wrong with the components listed above.

Thaks for the detail.  NVIDIA recommended  the 2200 to me.  I haven't gotten it yet as my current one is still  hanging on.

Macs are really outdated, the desktop hasn't been updated in years and there's uproar about their desktop pcs being completely dead. That processor is 8 core, but only runs 2.4ghz.

Current 4 core processors hit up to 4.5ghz stock. Most applications don't use more than 4 cores, not sure about SPP. Maybe you can still return those parts and do some more research, it's really easy to find a good build.

Re: New PC and SPP6x

Also...I really don't know about that graphic card, but based on it being in a Mac, it's currently a way overpriced legacy card. It's has benchmarks speed of a 6+ year old graphic card:http://www.futuremark.com/hardware/gpu/NVIDIA+Quadro+K2200/review

If you can try returning everything and research it. You could probably make a much faster pc for half the price. Oftentimes legacy hardware has a high price due to low supply and availability through 3rd parties. If you look at some really old 5 year old ram for example, it's costlier than state of the art high speed ram with double or triple capacity.

probably not what you want to hear though.

Hi Paul, thanks for the info.

You stated that your new computer is ". . . specifically tuned for heavy calculation fluid modeling. Graphic environment is set for 3d video editing."

Is it a Blender video animation workstation?

What OS are you running? (Is it a hackintosh machine a Windows machine, or something else?)

Re: New PC and SPP6x

I posted this just to give some feedback. In a nutshell it is this:

8 cores

16 threads

32gb RAM

1TB SSD

I am sure this machine is more robust than most. It is the most powerful machine I have ever used.

Full size DP2Q files edited nearly in real time. The SW did hang up changing white balance and color mode, but overall it was much, much better. It is workable whereas before it was not.

Do with this info what you will. It is fascinating that an old Mac laptop running W7 in a virtual Linux environment can produce similar performance. If that is the case, how is a worker to know how to better his RAW processing experience?
