GH4 Failure

GH4 failed to power up yesterday morning?

Panasonic battery was in the >80% charge state, .. took 15 minutes to fully recharge.

Meantime, I inserted the second fully charged battery, no change? .. no power light, .. dead?

The camera has had very little use since new, is in mint condition.

I had completed a short out-door still's shoot the previous day, .... viewed the images on it's screen then set it aside until the next morning. Picked the camera up to further view the shoot, .... "Dead"!

I removed the SD card, ... lens, battery, ... tried other SD cards and lenses, .... Dead.

Took it back to the shop, .. they rang Panasonic, ..... It's on it's way to the service center.

Has anybody experienced this problem with their GH4? .... Any Ideas?

I thank you in advance.

Mine worked and works fine after 2,5 yrs.

And it has gone through heavy rain, sleet, spray of a waterfall for hours. Just not a hickup. Great cam. But these things can happen, I hear them rarely about GH4 or other Panny's I have to say,.

I had a similar problem with my GH3. Would not switch on with internal battery, but did power on with external battery in the battery grip. The circuit diagrams in the service manual show a protection diode in the internal battery power circuit, the power from the battery grip bypasses this diode. I suspect that there is another diode in the battery grip but I do not have a circuit diagram for the battery grip. I took the camera in for service, iirc the total cost was about €110, the bill stated a diode costing €1 was replaced.

Re: GH4 Failure

Thank you for your good input, it confirms my findings.

Circuit shows a 32v 2.5Amp fuse through to a resistor then capacitor (They call it a filter) and there would be a diode in there for polarity protection.

I'm checking out a grip tomorrow, if that works out, great, .. if not I'll remove the motherboard and check the discrete components and replace them?

Thank you again for your help

My GH4 is now suddenly dead.  It was working fine yesterday.  Went to use today and nothing. No power at all.  Batteries are charged.  Not impressed at all as I’ve had bad luck with the GH cameras.  My GH3 has the LCD screen go dead.  This GH4 had a misfiring flash problem (firing when closed), and now its dead.

Does the GH4 work with a battery in the battery grip ? If yes then most likely an internal fuse in the body has blown and can only be repaired by sending the camera in for service.

No, it doesn’t work with the grip either.  It’s completely dead.  I have no idea what happened to it. ☹️

interesting...you'd think for the cost of these cameras, they'd be much more reliable

Sample variation combined with complex electronics in an enclosed space. You're going to see some failures in a batch.

It’s frustrating.  I keep reading how durable these cameras are, being used in extremes from deserts to the arctic.  My cameras don’t see anything near those conditions and are not subjected to any sort of rough handling.

Yet, I had problems with my GH3 and now my GH4 which of course is out of warranty.  My GX7 which I’ve had for years is rock solid and reliable.  But I have bad luck with the GH cameras.   I’m actually planning to get a new camera next year, but I’m not sure I’d buy another GH at this point.  Very disappointed.

Mixed bag

My GH4 has been rock solid, knock on polycarbonate... My GH3 has been the buggy one. The front dial is unresponsive at times, and the camera does a power on and power off cycle for 25 seconds or so when first turned on.

If Panasonic wants to attract pro users they better get these issues worked out. That combined with their dismal repair policies and service centers here in the U.S. leave me wanting. Love the cameras, the service support (pro and otherwise) needs A LOT of work.

Re: GH4 Failure

Update for anyone interested...

The authorized repair center contacted me. Camera needs a new logic board (called Main PCB). No indication as to what happened to it. Again, the camera was working fine one day and dead the very next. The PCB has already been replaced once due to an issue where the flash would fire while in the closed position.

Still upset as this camera has been well cared for and hasn’t been exposed to any harsh conditions. Between the flash firing when closed issue and now this one, its been opened up several times now.

$450 to repair. Two logic board replacements. Not impressed at all. Still not sure if I’ll get it fixed or just trash it.

Do you have access to the schematics of this fuse?

could you share this fuse location and specification of the resistors around it?
