X-T2 in Mexico
15

Here are a few pictures from a trip to Mexico a few weeks back -- the first big outing for my new X-T2! Overall I was very impressed -- Autofocus much improved over the X-T1 and the handling was much better as well. Normally I switch on OIS on my 10-24 in low light, but with the X-T2 I found I was getting sharp pictures without even with shutter speeds less than 1/10s.

Any feedback on the pictures appreciated! You can find a lot more in the Flickr album at https://www.flickr.com/photos/larskotthoff/albums/72157675258588983

Re: X-T2 in Mexico

Good stuff, Lars! I see images from Mexico City, San Juan Teotihuacan, Oaxaca City, Monte Alban, Mitla, Tule, San Bartolo Coyotepec and other sites in Oaxaca. Imagination there are other areas I can't make out (San Miguel de Allende, perhaps?), but you made some good choices insofar as where you chose to spend your time. How long were you there, and was this your first visit?

Just a few general comments stemming from a look at your entire flicker page: a) nice use of the panorama mode, esp. at Teotihuacan and Monte Alban; b) there are a few too many wide shots where you pulled back too much, e.g., a solitary individual walking at the base of a huge, fairly bland expanse of wall; c) I think you tend to use your 90mm a bit too often to shoot marketplaces and night vendors. I'd like to see more wideangle street shots where you close physically with your subjects. The 90 is a fast lens that yields gorgeous image quality, so I can see using it as your go to glass for night scenes; but sometimes I'd love to see more of the environmental context conferred by a good wideangle lens.

Regards,

Will

Exif data would be really really helpful in photos like these.

Nice sharp images. A lot of 24mm shots with the 10-24mm. A real gem this lens.

Question about the 90mm : do you think the lack of OIS is limiting you ?

Re: X-T2 in Mexico

Thanks Will! You got all the places (there were a few small villages around Oaxaca that I forgot the names of...). First visit to that region of Mexico, we stayed for 10 days.

Thanks for the feedback. I did play around with the panorama mode a lot (mostly because the X-T2 makes it so much more accessible than the X-T1). On this trip, I didn't take my 56 (a mistake, as I realized quickly), and didn't really have anything in between 24 and 90mm. I felt that the 24 was too wide (I do have some market shots with that, but felt that they aren't as compelling), so I went for the 90.

Sorry about that, I'm not sure what happened with the embedding here (I guess Flickr strips the EXIF from the rescaled images?). You can find full EXIF data on Flickr though.

I did get a very small number of blurry pictures with the 90 in very low light, but in general I wouldn't say that it was limiting me. I'm comfortable going up to ISO 3200 with the X-T2 and at F2 that's sufficient in pretty much all cases for me.
