One with T6s

I replaced my T1i recently with this T6s. I really didn't need to upgrade but the touchscreen, 9 more megapixels (15-24), and the rear dial are very nice to have.

I took this today with version I of the EF 100-400. This one come out passable but there were many that didn't. Thanks for looking.

T6s and 100-400

Then I used my P-900 which is fine as long as the birds aren't flying. It's really better than a 150-500 IMO, again as long as the birds aren't in flight:

Thanks for sharing with us one of your pictures from the Canon T6s (760D) camera. It appears on my monitor that the image is better from the P-900. Why is that? Did you use a tripod? Have you tried using different lenses?

The P-900 images look better because, even though it has a small sensor, it has 2000mm optical zoom. It was camera of the year here last year in one of the reviews. I rarely use a tripod except for evening shots.

Re: One with T6s

I have a Sony HX90V with a 30x optical zoom.  When I first got my T6S, I was surprised that pictures coming out of the Sony looked sharper than what I was able to get from the Canon with a variety of lenses.

I think most of that has to do with in camera processing, which I'm guessing is much more aggressive in the small point and shoot cameras.  When shooting JPEG with my T6S, I now have increased the sharpening and color saturation in the  Picture Styles menu, and that has helped me get closer to what I want with little or no post processing.

Having said that, I am still impressed with just how good the IQ is on the better point and shoot cameras.

It's funny that you said that because I just changed the settings the way you described in Picture Styles. I agree with what you said. The P-900 has an 83x optical zoom and it's not very big or heavy, especially compared to the 100-400 setup I used.

Re: One with T6s

The last superzoom camera I had was a 6mp Sony H2 (12x zoom). I really liked that camera, but I found with all of our rainy and cloudy weather in Oregon that a DSLR was better (I have had Olympus and Canon DSLR cameras). But your P900 looks like it makes nice photos and the 2000mm EFL reach is impressive. In comparison, I can only reach a maximum of 960mm EFL with my Tamron 150-600mm lens.  How does the P900 do in cloudy weather?

The P-900  won camera of the year last year on a couple of sites. It's not fast to shoot like a DSLR and I have to use the EVF exclusively to hold the camera still, but the built in image stabilization is amazing. The ability to zoom in to 2000mm is sheer joy.

I included a few shots that I shot on cloudy days. It's not cloudy days that prevent a shot it's light on the bird. Sometimes they are up on a wire and they are just a dark shadow because of where I am relative to the sun. To be sure, the P-900 is a point and shoot, but for me it's all about getting the shot. I've never been able to come close to getting shots like these with my Canon 100-400. Those subjects are just too far away. But 2000mm is another story and so fun to have in a relatively light camera.

I think this is a juvenile Red Tailed Hawk

Northern Pintail

American Kestrel

California Quail

Red Tailed Hawk

Blue Heron
