Just a few shots to take us away from discussing the K-70, K-1 or K-P and remind everybody that the K-5 II(s) series can still deliver! The first three were shot with the DA*50-135mm/f2.8 and the last two with a Revuenon 55mm/f1.2

Like #2 very much, and love #3 - what are we looking at there? Great catch & framing!

Re: Picture break

I don't get too caught up with surmising about new gear which comes up every 12 months ........... but I have the K5iis and together with nice glass can still kill a great image.

Nice shots.......

This taken last night in a rare walkabout for me with cam in hand. Lowering light handheld, city in contrast, Perth, Western Australia.

Re: Picture break

Nice photos, but your sharpening seems a bit harsh, unless you were being artistic about it.

It's part of an announcement board near the beach access at a small North-sea village called Castricum, in the North-West of the Netherlands. The board itself is made of what seems to be washed-up wood and an artist drilled through some stones he found and stacked them on top - that's "modern art" for you!

I pulled an image off Google Maps for context:

Right on the money!

It is an effect of a GMIC script I used based on this discussion: https://pixls.us/articles/highlight-bloom-and-photoillustration-look/

It gives some interesting results which may or may not be to everyone's liking of course. In this case and with these images I used it on purpose so you are quite correct about the sharpening!

Cheers,

Mike

Interesting. Been to Zandvoort, Amsterdam and Enkhuizen in this region, but have never been there ...

Works for me! As I said good framing - you saw the graphic potential in that very well.

I pulled an image off Google Maps for context:

Thanks very much for that!

Re: Picture break

Thank you for the much-needed picture break!

I really like these, a little abstract/geometric, a little nature, a little human intervention, a recipe that's just right for my taste!

Can you share some post-processing tips?

Ouch! That is a haaaaard question to answer!

miles green wrote:

I find that extremely hard to answer as I fiddle around so much with my images and my processing varies along with the direction the wind is blowing

One thing I do end up doing a lot is to always grab a hand-held bracketed series of 3 shots (-2, 0 and +2) as a basis. Whether or not I end up using all three or not is decided on behind the computer.

I often experiment a bit with HDR (all of these were based off HDR versions of 3 exposures) trying to get detail in all areas. Usually I'm aiming for a more or less "natural look" , not the extremely colorful HDR's you sometimes see. I save the result of tonemapping as a 16-bit LDR image to avoid banding and deterioration.

Sometimes the tonemapped file needs only a bit of tweaking of the levels or curves and a bit of WB fiddling but I also use a lot of editing in Gimp (the newer 16/32 bits version) to remove distractions like roadsigns etc. There are a couple of scripts I use either with ImageMagick to generate an Orton-effect or with GMIC to get a more graphic representation (such as f.i. in https://pixls.us/articles/highlight-bloom-and-photoillustration-look/ )

Cropping and keystoning comes last after which I save the result as a jpeg file.

But that's just me and then even only the past few months until another way of processing grabs my attention - I love experimenting. Sometimes I do a lot of long exposure stuff using 10-stops ND filters or horizontal pano's to decrease the apparent DOF (not quite true Brenizer effect but something along those lines).

I could go on and on - I don't really have a "silver bullet" or a personal style to be honest. It's more of a spur-of-the-moment thing with me ... I just mess about a bit after reading up online. Maybe the fact that I'm using ever-evolving open-source stuff that requires a lot of fiddling about (Tommy - The Who reference unintended).

I've gotta download that ASAP, I'm still running the old 8-bit version.

interesting. i've been meaning to shoot some of those, using two images (=without cheating)!

or with GMIC to get a more graphic representation (such as f.i. in https://pixls.us/articles/highlight-bloom-and-photoillustration-look/ )

i use that one for portraits sometimes

Very interesting indeed.

It shows that these evidently simple images have been cared for extensively (and subtlely) to make them look this good. Nicely done!

Thanks for sharing Mike,
