M3 and M5 USB charging?

Hi,

Anyone has any experience with whether these cameras can be charged via USB? If so is it a standard USB cable and how long does it take to charge up a battery?

Thanks

ANSWER:
Canon EOS M3

The M3 cannot be charged via USB.  I have a second battery and a mobile charger that can plug 2 batteries into it, and that can be plugged into a USB to charge.  I keep a mobile USB battery on me and the setup works great as I can either charge via device or have 1-2 batteries charging in my bag, with one in my camera.

The M3 and M5 do not have the necessary circuitry for USB charging, you have to take the battery out to charge it.

Thanks all, I have less hopeful on the M3 but thought I read somewhere the M5 has it.... Oh well.

Actually by the looks of things there should be an update on all standard USB charging cameras to the Type C USB ports...its quicker for phones a tablets. Should work the same for cameras..... Dont like carrying too many chargers around.

Not only are you 5½ years late to this thread (it was answered in 2017), but your information is incorrect for the question that was asked. These two "photo devices" (M3 & M5) CANNOT be charged using a standard (or any other) USB cable.

The OP (person you replied to) has also not posted on DPR in 4½years.

You aren't entirely correct, I can put the battery from either of them into M6 mk II, RP or R10 (or any other late entry canon which uses LP-E17) and even use external powerbank to charge because those 3 use dog standard USB-C.

Look again. The OP (many years ago) asked if it was possible to charge the M3 or M5 CAMERAS with USB. The question wasn't whether the batteries from those cameras could be charged with USB.

Third party USB battery chargers have been around for a while (no need to use a different camera to charge the batteries in), but that wasn't the original question.

This old thread reminds me, what a pain in the neck it was not being able to plug in the camera to charge the batteries.
