BIF with E-Shutter, some sample photos taken with the E-M1.1
19

My E-M1.1 has always been suffering from shutter shock at speeds between 1/400s and 1/2000s and using the electronic shutter is the only way for my cam to producee realiably sharp images. But i hesitated to use it with fast moving subjects like birds in flight because i was afraid of rolling shutter effects.

Last November i had a chance to photograph some trained birds flying without harness in a forrest and decied to stop worrying and use the e-shutter.

In my opinion even the images showing rolling shutter somehow came out usable although some of them look a bit unreal.

It was raining and rather dark and i had to use ISO 3200 and de-noise afterwards. All images were taken with C-AF, 1 field, serial L with 8FPS and E-shutter.

What do you think?

Tawny owl

Long-eared owl with visible rolling shutter

Long-eared owl with lots of rolling shutter but i love the result

Very good ones, the few with obvious "slow shutter speed" motion on wings just is what they are. But many were surprisingly good!

Fun set, and well done I think.

Very good captures, even the rolling shutter ones which are a good demonstration of the effect.

The last goshawk shot is particularly good.

Still surprised about your comment of shutter shock at speeds up to 1/2000 sec. Not my experience with the E-M1 which I used mainly with the mechanical shutter.

well, i guess i got a lemon and prefered to use the PEN-F for everything not moving fast but since they added e-shutter i was able to take some nice pics. The E-M1.1 now lives in my hubby's camera bag and i am happy with a shutter shock free E-M1.2

I've observed in the past when checking shutter shock that two examples of the same model can actually vary - one will show it, the other not, with the exact same settings and even the same lens.  It's such a complex equation that contributes to its appearance or non-appearance.

#4 is very good. I like the rolling shutter effect on these photos. I prefer this over Pana 4K snaps.

Interesting experiment with a good outcome, Sabine

I don't think the second and third pix are actually usable in the "pure" sense of the word (whatever I am trhing to say actually means!) but oh boy, they sure are FUN!

That bat looks absolutely LETHAL -- some sort of CIA automaton. LOL.

Geoffrey, the lethal bat is an obviously distorted harmless owl :-D, i suppose it will take some more time until technology can morph animal types on the fly

Thank you

I was limited to 1/1000s because i did not want to exceed ISO 3200 but even using much faster shutter speed would have produced that strange effect on the wings of the long-eared owl.

This was very neat to see for me, as a very frequent BIF shooter...I actually never even thought about what the electronic shutter would do to BIF shots, but just avoided it since I knew it would suffer distortion.

But the results in some of these were actually quite interesting - and the way the wings blurred is actually kind of wild and different from the norm.  It actually makes me want to try a few e-shutter experiments now with BIFs - just to see what kind of strange distortions I get.  As you've shown, some can be very interesting, a little surreal, but still cool!

Sometimes I think a *little* bit of rolling shutter actually adds to an image. I've never seen a Goshawk in the wild, even though they're supposedly around here.

Me neither, we have falcons here and bussards but i wouldn't even know where to look for a Goshawk. This one was found injured and the bird trainer healed and then trained him to fly patterns on command.
