Re: magnification, focal length and focus distances

I am not an every day shooter, so sometimes my cameras collect a bit of dust. Plus, when in use, they go into a jacket pocket...

About IQ... I try to not be a pixel peeper, so I would say the two are more than I need in this department. And I have not conduct a side by side comparison as the 2 cameras serve different purpose for now. What I like about the X70 is that the output has more character OOC. Contrast and tonality, color and skin tones are really great and offer also more customization. The Canon is more generic, great rendering but more classic. In return, it offer more versatility thanks to its zoom lens. And in Raw it has a lot of potential.

Re: magnification, focal length and focus distances

magnification (circle diameter) = FL (x) / focus distance (y) * crop factor

It is not completely true as the focus distance stated by the camera is relative to the front lens, but it should be a somewhat close approximation

Re: it is all about physics.

Played around a lot with the G7X this weekend.  Yes, stepping it down at close range improves the image and standing back and zooming in improves it further although by this method, you can't focus in as large as an area as getting in close and using widest angle.  Boy though at all focal lengths, the corners are definitely and noticeably soft with this camera.  I never really paid attention before as mostly I took candid shots and didn't pixel peep.

Will set up coworkers G5X with a custom setting of f5.6 and try to convince her to go this route when she needs to get close.  For my work use, my G15 is still going to rule but if I only could pick one camera, I would definitely choose my G7X over the G15.  Lucky to have both.  In the past when I've upgraded my powershot, I would give the older one to a family member but not in this case, the G15 will stay with me for its life.

Re: it is all about physics.

I am curious to see a comparison between the two cameras in macro. If you find the times to do it, please do not hesitate to share it, I would be grateful to you.

Oh, and if you want to expand the depth of field with the G7x, do not hesitate to stand back a bit more and then crop later (or use the digital teleconverter)
