1080p and youtube

As I've written about before, I've been very impressed with the quality of the 1080p footage on the NX500 after being a bit disappointed with 4k,so I recently shot a few short clips to upload to YouTube. I use YouTube primarily as a way of both storing and cataloguing video and being able to easily play it on various devices.

I converted the h265 to h264 using handbrake and relatively low compression settings (end result was indistinguishable in my eyes) and uploaded the clips to YouTube. I was quite disappointed with the resulting output on YouTube, it was far inferior to the original. Whilst I understand that YouTube does provide heavy compression, this was really noticeable, in contrast to when I've uploaded 4k content before.

I then had an idea to convert the 1080p file to UHD using handbrake and then uploading it to YouTube. The result is much better and even uses the VP9 codec, which is more efficient I think. Now the resulting clip is much more similar to the original. Obviously it's not really UHD but maybe I've tricked YouTube into thinking it is, so it uses a higher bitrate and more advanced codec.

Re: 1080p and youtube

How about just encoding to vp9 in hd and then upload?

That's a good idea, I don't think handbrake supports this - do you know of any other software that does?

I use ffmpeg, but handbrake 1.0 (out since Xmas) does as well.

Ah does it that's good to know. I need to have another go at the latest version as when I tried it before I could only get it to output to 1080p for some reason.

Re: 1080p and youtube

But isn't the point to have 1080 video?

Yep, with the NX500 but I'm also shooting 4k with the NX1 so need to be able to encode to 4k as well.
