Reassign M5 record button

I have accidentally made several recording by pressing the record button in error.

I would like to disable it and possibly replace with a different function. What is the procedure for doing this? I have tried to follow the manual without success.

Also would appreciate suggestions of the function to assign to the button.

Thanks Derek

Go into C.Fn II: Others, Custom Controls.  Press SET.

Arrow down twice until the REC button is highlighted (along with the 4-way).  Press SET.

Right arrow until only the REC button is highlighted, and the cursor is over the "Movie" symbol.  Press SET.

Now arrow to whichever function you want this button to be reassigned to.  Press SET.

Voila!

Note: This can all be done with the touchscreen too.

Happy shooting!

ps.  I sure wish I could reassign this button to be the "Delete" button!!!

After hitting the record button accidently, I re-assigned it to the Depth of Field (DOF) preview, which is not on any other button. If you hit DOF by mistake, it doesn't accidently make any changes to the camera and goes away as soon raise your finger off it. I thought DOF was a good choice for this poorly placed button. But then, it is a tiny camera. And it doesn't waste the button.

That's an excellent idea.

I turned it off.  If you turn the left selector to movie, the button automatically works again.  Goes off when you go off movie.  Canon needs to move this on the m6. 😖

Re: Reassign M5 record button

I eventually assigned DOF preview to the record button and used the spare button (m-fn) as the record button.

Thanks for the advice.

Quick question, can this button be assigned to "AF-On"?

The only button you can use for AF-On is the ( * ) button. IMO I think the REC button would be a little cramped for your thumb (likewise the INFO button).

I've gotten used to the M5's location, but the camera just isn't big enough to put it in an ideal position like on the xxD and xD series. I'll have to see how it does with gloves on. I may have to stick a little rubber pad on it.

One nice thing about using BBAF is that whenever I pick the camera up I just (half) press the shutter button to start waking the camera up while I bring it up to shooting position. And it doesn't AF on my shoes! (I have Continuous AF disabled too).

Re: Reassign M5 record button

I know this is an old thread but I have the M50 Mark II and I’m struggling with the position of the record button. It is on the top, next to the main camera button. I followed the instructions and got to the custom control screen however, it appears that this button is not customisable as it doesn’t come up as an option to change when you go through them. Any suggestions? It is literally impossible not to accidentally record while taking photos. It is such a design flaw.
