RAW-JPEG autoswitch mystery

I recently acquired NX3000 out of curiousity and I am overall pleased with the camera.

I always keep shooting mode on all my cameras to RAW including on this one. On a recent trip I noticed that a few pics in series were shot in JPEG mode. That's quite surprising as I don't remember changing mode (in fact I never shoot JPEG).

More surprisingly, there are two series of pictures shot in JPEG mode. Pictures before and after those series are in raw files.

Any idea how this could have happened?

The priority mode dials support Raw( Aperiture, Shutter, etc) , If you switch the dial to automatic or scene selection, it won't be taken in raw but in jpeg. Not all of the dial modes support Raw. Or that is what I have come to learn when using my Nx500 recently.

oh, that's quite stupid of Samsung to associate shooting mode with storage mode. I am primarily a Sony shooter and previously Pentax but never came across such thing.

Let me try and see if that was the cause.

Re: RAW-JPEG autoswitch mystery

I think Faye Wong has the correct explanation for this case, but it is also worth knowing that booting the camera without any SD switches to jpeg only and does not automatically switch back when an SD is inserted or on reboot, it must be changed back manually in the menus.  At least for NX300 and NX1, I don't have your exact model.

Check the exif for the shooting mode I suppose, if you don't remember using those modes than be wary that your mode dial may be getting a bit off... a known issue that a number of forum members have faced.

Re: RAW-JPEG autoswitch mystery

Checked exif and those JPEG were indeed shot in program mode, thank you for explanation. However this is a serious logical bug which Samsung should fix.

Thanks Faye wong and all of you for responding.

This can also happen if you use the NX 45mm 3D lens.  If you accidentally switch the 2D/3D switch which is easily done unfortunately the camera will stop shooting in RAW and shoot in JPG for 3D mode.  I have had to put some tape over the switch to stop it from happening.

That is very interesting to note, since i also have the NX 45mm 3d Lens. I think 3D was a popular thing a few years ago , but its a fad these days to shoot in 3d. feels more like a gimmick since I still need a 3D television too. I will probably shoot in 2D 99.9% of the time.

You don't actually need a 3D television, you just need to convert the files and then use some cheapo red/green 3d glasses. The results are actually pretty decent.
