T1i video recording? How big will the file be?

Howdy,

I understand that the cameras can only record 30 minutes of video before stopping and having to be started up again.  I also see that the file sizes can't be over 4 gigs.  So this leads me to two questions:

1) How much space does 30 minutes of 720p/30fps video take up?

2) Does the camera automatically create multiple files if it goes over the 4 gig mark that I can splice together afterward or what happens when the file hits the 4gig mark?

Thanks!

Hi Kelemvor,

I don't do video, but I've worked in the IT industry for many year's and this answer I provided for another poster a few day's ago should work, EXFat has an almost limitless file size. (16 Exabytes.)

Hi HannahIvy,

You could try formatting your 64GB Card to EXFat using your computer,(Either Window's Vista or later and/or MAC OS X after Snow Leopard(10.6.5)) then putting it in your camera and see if the camera can write to it without any problems, I believe Canons can see EXFat Cards, this should get round the 12 minute time limit and give you the full 29 minutes and 59secs.

Do Not format the SD Card when you put it in the Camera as it will revert back to FAT32. (4GB File size)

The other way is to stick with the Camera's FAT32 and reduce the quality of the Video to give you a longer filming time.

Good Luck.

p. 123 of the T1i/500D instruction manual. 720p fills a 4GB card with 18 min. of video.  16GB (4 x 4GB) fills in 73 min. = about 18 min. for each 4GB file.

T1i/500D - no. p. 127. Stops automatically at 4GB and you have to manually restart it. same for T2i/550D and T3i/600D. With the T4i/650D and later the camera will automatically continue video recording to a new file. You'll have a series of 4GB files that I presume you can combine in post. I don't know if there is a noticeable gap between files.
