Film compared to Video on my Rebel T5

Ok so I just got my rebel and I'm slowly figuring it out. However today while I was trying to get a video the shot was basically completely white/washed out. When I held the auto focus button down it would dim down to what I wanted the shot to look like but when I released it would go right back to the washed out version. When I switched the camera to landscape mode to take pictures it looked great and took beautiful pictures that I was really happy with, but I couldn't get the video to work to save my life. I tried changing the changing the iso and that didn't help a ton. I also tried a few different settings like turning on the highlight tone priority feature (I don't even know what that does and it didn't help so I turned it back off). I assume all of you here have loads more experience and could help me out which would be great. thank you

I'm writing because you didn't get any responses.  I don't have and don't know your camera, but if no one responds, try a google search or a search on youtube.  There is a lot of info out there.  I've gotten a lot of info through Youtube,  good luck.

You may have inadvertently set the aperture at a fixed opening that is allowing too much light for the scene. In still picture mode the camera will compensate by adjusting the shutter speed.

Yes I guess the first thing is to make sure you have the camera set to auto exposure (in the movie menu)
